Can you attach a neck strap to a Nikon 80-400mm lens?

I’ve seen some large telephoto lenses carried from the lens rather than the camera body, using a strap attached to the tripod collar or lens foot. Does the Nikon 80-400mm support this kind of setup, and is it practical to attach a strap there instead of using the camera’s strap lugs?

I often attach a strap to the tripod collar on my larger lenses. For this I use those oversized idiot straps and just make a girth hitch through the threaded hole where you normally attach to a tripod.

I think it's great alternative to buying a dedicated collar which is going to be way overpriced.

Yes—on larger telephoto lenses, a common approach is to attach the strap to the tripod collar or lens foot rather than the camera body. One community suggestion is to use a strong strap and loop it through the threaded tripod-mount area on the collar/foot with a girth hitch.

This can be a practical way to carry a heavy lens like an 80-400mm, since it shifts the load to the lens instead of the camera mount. Just make sure the strap is secure and rated for the weight of your setup. In general, attaching a strap at the lens collar/foot is a standard solution for heavier lenses.
