Can the Sigma TC-1401 teleconverter be used with Canon EF lenses?

I want to use a Sigma TC-1401 1.4x teleconverter primarily with a Sigma 150-600mm, but I’m wondering whether it can also be used with Canon EF lenses such as the EF 70-200mm f/4. Will it physically mount, and do autofocus and metadata reporting work? I’m also aware that compatibility may depend on the camera body.

I've now had a chance to rent both the Sigma TC-1401 and a Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L, and can confirm they do work together - at least using my 700D.

Yes—based on the community test, the Sigma TC-1401 does work with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 on a Canon 700D, including basic operation.

A few important limits apply:

  • It should mount on Canon EF lenses, but not EF-S lenses. EF-S lenses protrude farther into the mount and generally are not compatible with EF teleconverters.
  • Compatibility can vary by camera body and by specific lens/teleconverter combination.
  • With third-party teleconverters, autofocus and electronic communication often work, but they are not guaranteed on every body or with every lens because third-party makers rely on reverse-engineered protocols.

So the practical answer is: yes for at least some Canon EF lenses, including the EF 70-200mm f/4 in the reported test, but verify your exact body/lens combo before buying if possible. If you plan to use it on EF-S lenses, assume it will not fit or work.
