Can the Nikon D7000 be set up for back-button autofocus?

I want to use back-button autofocus on a Nikon D7000, but it does not have a dedicated AF-ON button like some higher-end Nikon bodies. Can the D7000 be configured to use another button for AF activation, and if so, what trade-offs are there compared with a camera that has a dedicated AF-ON button?

Essentially, the camera is too small to accommodate an AF-ON button. You can map this function to the AF-L/AE-L button by changing custom setting f5. You will not be able to use the button for autofocus lock or auto-exposure lock if you do so.

Yes. On the Nikon D7000, you can set up a form of back-button autofocus by assigning AF-ON to the AE-L/AF-L button in the camera’s custom controls (custom setting f5).

That gives you the basic back-button AF workflow: focus is triggered from the rear button instead of the shutter release.

The main trade-off is that the D7000 does not have a separate dedicated AF-ON button, so if you remap the AE-L/AF-L button for autofocus activation, you give up using that button for its normal AE lock or AF lock role. In other words, you can get back-button focus behavior, but with less flexibility than on bodies that include a dedicated AF-ON control.
