Can the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 bracket shutter speed in Manual mode with Auto ISO locked across the sequence?

I use a Canon EOS Rebel SL3 in Manual mode with Auto ISO. I’d like the camera to choose an ISO for a reference exposure, then shoot a 3-frame bracket by changing shutter speed only while keeping that same ISO for all three frames. Is that possible with the camera’s built-in bracketing, or does Auto ISO prevent this?

On the SL3, use the camera’s built-in AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) feature via Expo.comp./AEB in the menu. The manual describes setting a 3-shot bracket around a base exposure.

However, if you leave Auto ISO enabled, the camera may adjust ISO as it meters each frame, so it won’t reliably keep the same ISO across all three shots. If your goal is to bracket exposure by shutter speed only, the practical approach is:

  1. Take a reference shot in Manual + Auto ISO.
  2. Note the ISO the camera selected.
  3. Switch ISO from Auto to that fixed value.
  4. Use AEB or manually change shutter speed for the bracketed shots.

Your reasoning is sound: changing ISO alone does not capture more scene information; it mainly changes amplification. For true exposure bracketing, varying shutter speed (or aperture, where appropriate) is the useful method.

To do bracketing with your camera you can use already defined way in the firmware. You can find the below text on page 162 of camera manual.

  1. Select [Expo.comp./AEB].
  • Under the [camera] tab, select [Expo. comp./AEB], then press <0>.
  1. Set the AEB range.
  • Turn the dial to set the AEB range (1).
  • Press the keys to set the exposure compensation amount. If AEB is combined with exposure compensation, AEB will be applied centering on level of exposure compensation.
  • Press to set it.
When you press the shutter button halfway, the AEB range will be displayed in the viewfinder.
  1. Take the picture.
  • Focus and press the shutter button completely, and the shots will be taken in the sequence of standard exposure, decreased exposure, and increased exposure

If this do not work in M mode you can set temporary you camera to Av and use above procedure.

or set temporary ISO to static value , set speed, aperture, take a shot, change aperture/speed, take a shot, change aperture/speed, take a shot. And then return to auto ISO
