I’m considering a Canon EOS R for recording stage shows that may run up to about 90 minutes. Can this camera record for longer than 29:59 in a single clip, or is there a hard time limit? Also, does the SD card choice affect this, and do recording limits differ between Full HD and 4K?

Canon EOS R have limitation of 29min 59sec for video recording (source)

Another video limitation people comment on is the maximum record time of 29 minutes 59 seconds. This is common in video-capable stills cameras, and it's because of WTO tax rules: any device that records for longer than this is classed as a video camera and taxed at a higher rate.

Depend of framerate and codec you will get those storage limitations:

4k

Frame Rates Codec (H.264) Recording Time (128 GB Card) Data Rate
29.97/24/23.98 fps ALL-I 35 minutes 480 Mbps
29.97/24/23.98 fps IPB 2 hours 21 minutes 120 Mbps

FullHD

Frame Rates Codec (H.264) Recording Time (128 GB Card) Data Rate
29.97/24/23.98 fps ALL-I 3 hours 6 minutes 90 Mbps
29.97/24/23.98 fps IPB 23 hours 11 minutes 12 Mbps

You can calculate based on your codec and size of videoframe what card do you need. About the speed of the card you can check here: enter image description here NB! speed on the image are in MB, in tables are in Mb so you need v60 card for 4k and v30 for FullHD

No. The Canon EOS R has a maximum single-video recording time of 29 minutes 59 seconds, so it will not record a continuous 90-minute clip in one go.

SD card capacity and video settings affect how much total footage fits on the card, but they do not remove the per-clip 29:59 limit. Recording mode does matter for storage use: 4K uses much more space than Full HD, and higher-bitrate codecs fill cards faster.

From the shared figures, a 128GB card holds about:

  • 4K IPB: roughly 2 hours 21 minutes total
  • 4K ALL-I: roughly 35 minutes total

So for long events, card size/bitrate determine total available recording time, but the camera will still stop each clip at 29:59. If you need uninterrupted recording of a full stage show, this camera is not ideal unless you can restart recording between clips.
