On the Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i, does pressing the shutter button halfway trigger autofocus during movie recording, or only before recording starts?

According to page 170 of the EOS Rebel T4i/650D Instruction Manual you focus by using a shutter half-press before recording begins, then Movie Servo AF is active while recording. Page 191ff explains how to select other options.

On the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i, a half-press of the shutter button is used to focus before movie recording starts. Once recording is underway, autofocus is handled by Movie Servo AF if that feature is enabled. The camera’s manual notes the pre-recording half-press behavior and refers to the movie AF settings for other autofocus options during video.
