Can the Canon EOS 1300D turn off the LCD automatically when using the viewfinder?

I’m new to DSLR photography and recently bought a Canon EOS 1300D. On some cameras, the rear LCD turns off automatically when you put your eye to the viewfinder. My 1300D doesn’t seem to do that. Does this model have an eye sensor, or is there a setting I need to change? I’d prefer not to have the LCD on all the time while shooting through the viewfinder.

No, your camera does not have a sensor that detects if your eye is near the viewfinder. You can manually turn off the LCD by pressing the DISP. button. Also, you can set the LCD to turn off when you half-press the shutter button. On page 197 of the user manual, the options under MENU, [LCD off/on btn] setting are:

  • [Shutter btn.]: When you press the shutter button halfway, the display will turn off. When you let go of the shutter button, the display will turn on.

  • [Shutter/DISP]: When you press the shutter button halfway, the display will turn off. The display will remain off even after you let go of the shutter button. To turn on the display, press the <DISP.> button.

  • [Remains on]: Display remains on even when you press the shutter button halfway. To turn off the display, press the <DISP.> button.

The EOS 1300D does not have an eye-proximity sensor, so it cannot automatically turn off the rear LCD when you bring the camera to your eye.

You can still control the LCD behavior in the menu:

  • Shutter btn.: the LCD turns off when you half-press the shutter, then turns back on when you release it.
  • Shutter/DISP: the LCD turns off when you half-press the shutter and stays off until you press DISP. again.
  • Remains on: the LCD stays on until you turn it off manually.

You can also manually switch the display off with the DISP. button.

So in short: no eye sensor on this model, but yes, you can set the LCD to turn off while shooting through the viewfinder.
