Can one intervalometer work with both a Canon 7D and Rebel T3i?

I use both a Canon 7D and a Rebel T3i, which have different remote-release connectors. I’d like one intervalometer setup that can work with both bodies by swapping cables, rather than buying separate dedicated Canon units. My main uses are timelapse and possibly HDR bracketing. Are there third-party intervalometers or controller systems that support both cameras, and are there any camera-based alternatives worth considering?

For the T3i at least, if HDR and timelapse is the goal, MagicLantern could do what you want. It's unclear if they'll ever get MagicLantern working on a 7D though (current status)

Yes—one controller can work with both bodies if it supports interchangeable camera cables. A modular system such as CameraAxe was suggested as the kind of intervalometer/controller that can be adapted to different camera connectors by changing the cable.

If your main goal is timelapse or HDR, also consider camera-based firmware options instead of external hardware:

  • Magic Lantern can handle timelapse/HDR features on the T3i.
  • Support for the 7D was noted as uncertain in the discussion.
  • CHDK was mentioned, but that applies to supported Canon compact cameras, not DSLRs like the 7D or T3i.

So the practical takeaway is:

  1. For one external device across both DSLRs, look for an intervalometer with interchangeable Canon cable options.
  2. For the T3i alone, Magic Lantern may eliminate the need for external hardware.
  3. CHDK is not the solution for these two DSLR bodies.

If dual-body compatibility is the priority, focus your search on modular intervalometers/controllers rather than model-specific remotes.
