Can my Canon EOS Rebel T1i create selective-color photos in-camera?

I want to make photos where only one color remains visible and everything else is grayscale, like a red subject against a black-and-white background. Can the Canon EOS Rebel T1i do this in-camera, or do I need to edit the photo afterward? If editing is required, what kind of software or approach is typically used?

This is not done in-camera but in post processing. If that structure was the only red thing in a frame then selective desaturation would have done the trick, else it is pretty much just selecting the structure and desaturating the rest.

The Canon T1i doesn’t do this effect in-camera. The usual way is to shoot a normal full-color photo, then create the selective-color look in post-processing.

Typical workflow:

  • Take the image in color.
  • In editing software, desaturate the whole image or most of it.
  • Keep one chosen color, or manually mask the subject you want to remain in color.

If the only red object in the frame is your subject, selective desaturation may be quick and easy. If other areas share that same color, you’ll usually need more careful masking or selection work for a clean result.

This is generally better than relying on an in-camera effect anyway, because you preserve the original full-color image and can change your mind later.

Software options mentioned by the community include Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, GIMP, and Tintii.
