I need to batch-rename images for newspaper submissions using a format like RQ003A, RQ003B, RQ003C, where the final character is a unique letter for each photo. I use a Mac and have started trying Lightroom, but I’m open to other software if needed. Can Lightroom do alphabetical sequence renaming, or would I need another tool or script?

Unfortunately Lightroom's automatic remaming functionality only supports numerical sequences, see this Adobe help page for a complete list. ACDSee seems to support alphabetical sequences based on this help page but I haven't used it myself.
