Can Lightroom automatically reorganize photo files into date-based folders on disk?

I’ve merged several Lightroom catalogs and imported older photos, and now my archive on an external drive is messy. I’d like all images to live under one master folder in a date-based structure such as YYYY/MM/DD, using metadata rather than moving files manually. There are 30,000+ files, so I want Lightroom to stay aware of any moves and avoid having to relink everything afterward. Does Lightroom have a built-in way to consolidate and reorganize files on disk like this, or is there another practical approach?

There is no simple "consolidate library" option, nor any plugin I'm aware of that will manage this for you.
As you no doubt know, Lightroom doesn't care where you store your files or what sort of directory hierarchy you might use (if any). In other words, moving these files is for your own satisfaction only. 30k files in one folder could be a performance hit, but otherwise I don't expect you'll see any performance change after moving files, either.
I suggest that the best and easiest way to do this is to bring a little organization at a time: Use the Library filters to find all photos in a given year (the metadata filter makes this easy). Within Lightroom create a new folder for that year, and drag all photos (previously selected) into this new folder. Repeat for each year you have photos.
You've now got a YYYY/file.ext hierarchy. The photos are now much more organized! Personally, I would consider this done (or a task for some lazy time) and not worry about further historical organization. Going forward you can import to a YYYY/MM/DD structure. Remember, Lightroom does not care that your files are only in YYYY folders, so the only benefit to taking this organization further is if you've got a very large number of photos in a single year where performance could, potentially, be impacted.

Lightroom does not have a one-click “consolidate library” feature that automatically rebuilds your folder structure from metadata. Based on the answers, there’s also no known Lightroom plugin that does this for you.
If you want Lightroom to keep track of the files, the safest approach is to reorganize from inside Lightroom: use Library filters (for example by year/date), create folders within Lightroom, then drag the selected photos into those folders. Do it in batches rather than all at once.
External tools such as ExifTool, PFrank, or Bulk Rename Utility can move/rename files and build date-based folders from EXIF metadata, but if you use them outside Lightroom, Lightroom will lose track of those files and you’ll need to relink them.
So the practical answer is:
- In Lightroom: manual batch reorganization, but Lightroom stays in sync.
- Outside Lightroom: more automation, but expect relinking afterward.
Also note that Lightroom itself doesn’t depend on a particular disk folder layout, so this is mostly for your own file-management preference.
