Can Lightroom 6 automatically write metadata changes to XMP or the file?

In Lightroom 6, I know I can manually save metadata to the file or XMP sidecar with Cmd/Ctrl+S or by using Metadata > Save Metadata to File. Is there a setting that makes Lightroom do this automatically, instead of requiring a manual save each time?

Lightroom can certainly do that - look at Catalog settings -> Metadata -> Editing -> Automatically write changes to XMP.

Yes. In Lightroom 6, enable Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically write changes into XMP.
With that turned on, Lightroom will automatically write metadata changes to XMP sidecar files for raw images, or into supported file formats themselves where applicable.
Some users leave this off because continuous writing can have performance drawbacks, and some prefer to reduce file-writing activity for integrity/backup reasons. A common alternative is to use a Smart Collection for images whose Metadata Status is not up to date, then periodically select them all and press Cmd/Ctrl+S to write changes in batches.
So the short answer is: yes, you can automate it, and the setting is in the catalog metadata preferences.
