I’m currently using Lightroom 3 and want to move to Lightroom 5. Can Lightroom 5 migrate a Lightroom 3 catalog directly, or do I need to upgrade through Lightroom 4 first?

Yes the LR5 installer will migrate a LR3 catalog to LR5, automatically. Better yet, the installer will make a copy of your LR3 catalog, and only migrate the copy, so that your original LR3 catalog is left intact, in case there are problems.
So have no fear, install LR5 (LR3 install will remain).

Yes. Lightroom 5 can upgrade a Lightroom 3 catalog directly; you do not need to install or migrate through Lightroom 4 first.
When you open your Lightroom 3 catalog in Lightroom 5, it will convert it for use in Lightroom 5. Lightroom also creates a separate upgraded copy of the catalog, leaving your original Lightroom 3 catalog unchanged as a backup. Your Lightroom 3 installation can remain on the computer as well.
So the usual path is simply: install Lightroom 5, open your Lightroom 3 catalog, and let Lightroom create the upgraded copy.
