Can iPhoto 11 automatically scale smaller photos to fill the screen when browsing?

In iPhoto 11, some images display smaller than my screen with black borders on all four sides when I move through an event using the left/right arrow keys. The files are sometimes around 1800×1200, while my display is 2880×1800. Larger images seem to fill the screen more often. Is there a setting to always fit photos to the screen while browsing, similar to Lightroom’s Fit mode, so smaller images are automatically scaled up instead of showing borders?

I haven't seen that option in iPhoto. The only way I've seen pictures upscaled to the screen resolution is when playing a slideshow. For that however you'll have to make a selection of pictures first and then use "play slideshow". In that mode you can use the space bar to start/stop the slideshow and the arrow keys to travel the pictures.
If that doesn't work for you you can also use the zoom control keys to make pictures fit. There is the Z key to toggle between 100% and whatever zoom ratio is used by default. And you can use Command-Plus (+) or Command-Minus (-) keys to change zoom.

iPhoto 11 does not appear to offer an always-on “Fit to screen” option for normal browsing with the arrow keys. From the available answers, smaller images are only automatically upscaled when viewed in slideshow mode.
Workarounds:
- Use slideshow mode if you want images scaled to the display; you can still use the space bar to pause/play and the arrow keys to move between photos.
- Use zoom controls manually while browsing:

So, for standard event/album browsing, there doesn’t seem to be a setting that forces every image to fill the screen automatically.
