Can I use a Canon EOS 500D remote shutter release without the 2-second delay?

I’m using a Canon EOS 500D with a Canon infrared remote and noticed that remote shooting seems to trigger only with a timer delay. Is it possible to use the remote without the 2-second delay, and does it depend on which Canon remote model I have?

It depends on the model.
Canon RC-1 has a slider in front between immediate and 2 sec delay.
Canon RC-5 doesn't have any slider and works only at 2 sec delay.
Canon RC-6 has a slider on the back to accomplish the same job as RC-1.
Check your model leaflet.

Yes — on the EOS 500D, whether you can shoot remotely with no delay depends on the remote model.
- Canon RC-1: has a switch for immediate or 2-second delay.
- Canon RC-6: also has a switch for no delay or 2-second delay.
- Canon RC-5: works only with a 2-second delay.
On the camera, you still use the self-timer/remote drive mode. The actual delay is then controlled by the remote, if your remote supports both options.
If you already selected the no-delay setting on an RC-1 or RC-6 but still notice a pause, the camera may be delaying while it tries to autofocus. Try focusing first, then switch the lens to manual focus before pressing the remote shutter button.
