Can I speed up Lightroom wedding photo culling with automation or plugins?

I cull large wedding shoots in Lightroom and want to reduce the time spent selecting keeper images. Typically I keep around 60–70% of the photos, choosing the best bride and groom poses while avoiding obvious duplicates or repeated shots. Is there any plugin, app, or workflow that can help automate this process, or is manual culling still the best approach?

If I understood your question correctly, you are looking for a tool to reduce the time spent during the culling process.

You can use software like FilterPixel to cull your photos automatically. (Full disclosure, I am the founder and CEO of FilterPixel)

How does this work?

Step 1:

Import Files & Create Your Project

When you come from a photo shoot, you can create a project & can drag and drop the folder containing Raw Files or JPEG's into FilterPixel App.

Step 2:

Use AI To Filter Out Bad Photos

The app automatically find photos with less focus quality & eye quality and filter them out into accepted, rejected, warnings & unlabelled.

  1. Accepted: FilterPixel AI provides control to the photographer to accept any photo, so it doesn't accept any photo by default.

  2. Rejected: Photos that are completely out of focus & have closed eyes are classified into rejected view automatically.

  3. Warnings: Photos with minor quality issues such as soft focus are classified into warning view automatically.

  4. Unlabelled: Photos without any issues are classified into Unlabelled view automatically.

Step 3:

Quickly Select Your Best Photos With AI Metrics & FaceViews

Every photo is provided with a quality metrics which can be used to narrow down your selections.

Step 4:

Export Photos to Lightroom or Local Folder

After your culling is done, you can export your photos to Lightroom or to a local folder on your hardrive.

You can find more about it at filterpixel.com.

Yes, you can speed up culling, but only part of the process can be automated reliably. Some dedicated culling apps use AI to flag technical issues such as soft focus, eye-quality problems, warnings, and likely rejects. That can help reduce the first pass.

However, choosing the “best” wedding images, poses, or emotional moments is still largely subjective, so manual review remains important. In practice, many photographers still use a fast rating workflow in Lightroom rather than relying fully on automation.

A simple Lightroom method is:

  • Use Survey mode to compare similar images
  • Turn on Auto Advance so Lightroom moves to the next image after you rate one
  • Use number keys to rate quickly
  • Create a Smart Collection for images rated above your cutoff

Some photographers also prefer a very fast external image viewer with keyboard shortcuts for next, zoom, and delete during the first pass.

So the short answer is: yes, software can help with technical filtering and speed, but it will not fully replace your judgment for wedding culling.
