Can I safely charge a Nikon Coolpix S9900 from a multi-port USB charger like an Anker 60W unit?

I have a Nikon Coolpix S9900 and want to travel with one charger for several devices. Nikon warns against non-Nikon chargers, but the camera can also charge from a computer’s USB port. Is it safe to use a third-party multi-port USB charger such as an Anker 60W 6-port charger, and is there any real risk of damage if the charger is rated for much higher current than the camera likely needs?

This is often a case of confusion. The amp rating on chargers is the maximum amount they can deliver.

The device you connect to a charger only draws as many amps as it requires (if possible). You could connect a 13amp charger to a 100milliamp device and it'd be fine.

Generally, yes—if the camera charges over standard USB, a reputable USB charger should be fine. A charger’s current rating is its maximum available output; the connected device is supposed to draw only what it needs. So a higher-rated USB charger does not automatically force excess current into the camera.

The main caveat is whether the charger follows USB power standards properly or intelligently negotiates output. If it behaves like a normal USB power source, charging the camera should be no different from charging from a PC USB port. One community response also reported successful use with the Anker charger.

Manufacturer warnings are common because they only officially support their own accessories. That doesn’t necessarily mean a quality third-party USB charger is unsafe.

Practical advice: use a good-quality USB cable and a reputable charger, and if you try it the first time, monitor for unusual heat or charging behavior. Avoid unknown or poorly made chargers.
