Can I reorganize photos into new collections in Darktable without moving files?

I have some large groups of images in Darktable, often 500–1000 photos at a time, because I originally imported them into broad folders or without separating them by event. I’d now like to organize them into smaller theme-based groups.

In Darktable, can I select photos from an existing group and place them into a new collection, or do I need to move the files manually into different folders on disk? Also, what’s the best way to view and manage these reorganized groups inside Darktable?

In addition to @bob-macaroni-mcstevens' excellent answer and for those seeking how to actually change how these collections are shown:

(these instructions are correct for Darktable ver 3.6.1. I have not verified for other versions.)

Change how photos are listed in the Collections panel by clicking the text below "Collections"
i.e. Film Roll, Folder, etc.

Doing this brings up a list of collection types.
Choices users may be more familiar with are "date-time taken" or "tag".

After choosing an option the window below that text will change to reflect the new sort order.

Yes — in Darktable, a “collection” is not necessarily a physical folder. It’s usually a set of filters used to display images. The default collection type, “film roll,” generally corresponds to a folder on disk, but collections can also be based on tags, date/time taken, lens, and other metadata.

So if you want to split a large set into theme-based groups, you usually do not need to move files manually. A common approach is to tag the relevant photos, then view them as collections by tag. Images can belong to multiple collections this way.

You can also change how the Collections panel groups photos by clicking the label under “Collections” (such as “Film Roll” or “Folder”) and choosing another collection type like “tag” or “date-time taken.” The panel will then update to show your images grouped that way.

If a certain filtered view is useful, you can save it as a preset for quick access later.

Only move files into different folders if you specifically want to reorganize your storage on disk, not just your browsing inside Darktable.
