Can I reopen a Photoshop layer in Camera Raw for editing?

I edited a JPEG in Photoshop and later noticed added noise in the sky after increasing saturation. I know Camera Raw's luminance noise reduction could help, but my workaround was to save the image as a JPEG, reopen it through Adobe Camera Raw, apply noise reduction, and then replace part of the older PSD to keep detail in the monument.

Is there a way to send an individual Photoshop layer directly to Camera Raw for further processing, or reopen a layer in Camera Raw after the fact?

After you make your adjustments in ACR, press Shift and then instead of Open Image, you'll see Open Object. That will create the layer as a smart object and you can then go back to ACR from that smart object layer. I believe you'd have to have known to do that from the start. I'm not aware of anyway to reopen a layer in ACR after the fact if you haven't opened it as a smart object.

Yes, but usually only if you set it up as a Smart Object when opening the file from Camera Raw.

In ACR, hold Shift and the Open Image button changes to Open Object. Opening this way creates a Smart Object layer in Photoshop. You can then reopen that layer in Camera Raw and adjust it non-destructively.

If the layer was not originally opened as a Smart Object from ACR, the community answer indicates there isn’t a direct way to reopen that existing layer in Camera Raw afterward. In that case, your workaround of reopening/exporting and reprocessing is essentially the alternative.

So the key is: if you think you may want to return to Camera Raw later, open the file from ACR as a Smart Object from the start.
