Can I install Sony camera firmware from a different country’s support site?

I have a Sony NEX-5R bought in the US. Sony offers firmware downloads on multiple regional support sites, such as the US, UK, and India. Since some camera variants differ by region, I’m wondering whether installing firmware from another country’s Sony site could cause problems, introduce bugs, or even make the camera unreliable. Is firmware generally interchangeable across Sony regions, or is it safest to use the download from the country where the camera was purchased?

So long as the firmware is legitimately from the manufacturer you'll be fine (someone is now bound to come up with an exception) but each model of a camera is made in one factory from the exact same parts and then shipped all over the world. Mechanisms exist to check that the firmware you're trying to apply is compatible (and stop you from applying the wrong firmware.)

The biggest difference you're likely to find is that the manufacturer may preset the user interface to the language for the region you download from, but that's easily changed.

With any firmware updates, if you're in any way unsure about what version to use then use the version from the country you purchased the device.

In general, if the firmware is an official Sony release and it matches your exact camera model, it should be fine. Camera firmware installers typically check compatibility and prevent you from applying the wrong firmware.

Regional support sites may host the same firmware package, sometimes with minor regional defaults such as interface language. Those settings are usually changeable.

That said, if you’re not specifically trying to solve a region-related issue, the safest and simplest choice is to use the firmware from the support site for the country where you bought the camera—in your case, the US Sony site. That avoids any confusion about model variants or regional packaging.

So: official firmware + correct model is usually safe, but when in doubt, use the firmware from your purchase region.
