Can I disinfect a DSLR body with isopropyl alcohol before shooting in an operating room?

I may be photographing a surgery in an operating room. I’ll be using a sterile camera cover, but I’ve also been asked to disinfect the camera itself. Is it generally safe to wipe the outside of a DSLR with isopropyl alcohol? Could alcohol vapor affect internal parts such as the sensor? If I do clean it, should I avoid any areas or take special precautions?

A lot of camera and lens cleaning fluids contain alcohol. Some do not and - of course - they claim it's better, but it does not make alcohol unsafe.
The outside of the camera can be cleaned with something moistened in alcohol without adverse effects. Do not use so much as to make the camera wet, particularly if yours is not weather-sealed and do it with the lens mounted.
Occasionally, I clean the lens contacts both on the lens and camera side with alcohol using a Q-tip and it has only improved things!

Yes—lightly wiping the camera body with isopropyl alcohol is generally considered safe. Camera and lens cleaning fluids often contain alcohol, and using a cloth or swab moistened with alcohol on the exterior should not harm the camera.
Key precautions:
- Don’t soak the camera or let liquid run into seams, buttons, or ports, especially on non-weather-sealed bodies.
- Keep a lens mounted while cleaning to reduce any chance of liquid or vapor reaching the sensor chamber.
- Alcohol vapor is unlikely to affect the sensor in any meaningful way during normal exterior cleaning.
- Avoid using ordinary alcohol solutions on the sensor itself. Some formulations, especially medical ones, may contain additives that leave residue, and isopropyl can streak on sensors.
- For lenses or sensors, use a cleaner specifically intended for optical/sensor cleaning if needed.
So: exterior body cleaning with a lightly moistened cloth is fine; avoid getting the camera wet, and don’t use general isopropyl alcohol directly on the sensor.
