Can I build a DIY motion/sound trigger for high-speed photography as a beginner?

I want to get started with high-speed photography and would like to use a motion, sound, or similar trigger, but commercial options seem expensive. I’m interested in building one myself, though I have little to no electronics experience.
Is this a realistic beginner project? Where should I start, and are there beginner-friendly kits or platforms that make it easier to learn while still being useful for photography?

You can decide how DIY you want to be. If you do not understand electronics, doing it all by yourself is going to be a bit of a stretch. That said you can buy it or build it (from a kit) using Trigger Trap.

Yes, but the right approach depends on whether your main goal is learning electronics or just getting a trigger working.
For a complete DIY build from scratch, it’s not especially beginner-friendly if you have no electronics background. A basic trigger typically needs a sensor or transducer, amplification with adjustable gain, a threshold/comparator stage, a latch, an output driver, plus power, connectors, and enclosure.
A more realistic starting point is a kit or an Arduino-based project. Community suggestions include Trigger Trap-style kits and Camera Axe, which can be bought assembled, as parts, or built from plans depending on your skill level. These are good stepping stones because they let you use common trigger sources like sound or light while learning gradually.
If you do build, practice soldering first on scrap boards or cheap parts so you don’t damage components or PCB traces.
So: yes, it can be a simple project in kit/Arduino form; no, a full from-scratch design is probably not the easiest first electronics project.
