Can I batch-convert Sony uncompressed RAW files to smaller compressed RAW files?

I shoot Sony .ARW files on an A7R II and have a large archive of uncompressed RAW images that take up a lot of disk space. I’d like to reduce storage use by converting them in batches to a compressed RAW format. Is there software that can do this, and if so, what format would the converted files be in?

It won't be an identical file to your cameras compressed option, but the free Adobe app called DNG Converter will compress it. The new file type will be .DNG, but it is still raw. DNG was proposed as a new universal standard, which didn't quite happen, but many raw editors likely will work with the DNG files. Experiment with just one file first.

Yes—one common option is Adobe’s free DNG Converter. It can batch-convert your Sony .ARW files into compressed .DNG files, which are still RAW files and usually take less space.
A few important caveats:
- The result will not be the same as your camera’s own compressed ARW format.
- The converted files will be .DNG, not .ARW.
- DNG is widely supported, but not every RAW workflow supports it equally, so test with a few files first before converting an entire archive.
If your editing software works well with DNG, this can be a practical way to save storage while keeping RAW flexibility.
