Can EOS Utility manually focus a Canon 700D while recording video remotely?

I’m using a Canon 700D with EOS Utility for remote video recording. I want to avoid autofocus because the lens noise is very noticeable during filming. Is there any way to adjust focus manually through EOS Utility while shooting video, or can EOS Utility only move focus when the lens is set to AF? If remote focus is possible, will it still make the same motor noise?

The EOS utility can only adjust the focus on your camera when the lens is set to AF (as it needs to use the motors in the lens to move the elements).

If your lens is set to AF you should be able to adjust the focus in EOS Utility using this area:

Note the arrow buttons in particular, these can be used for adjusting the focus remotely by eye

However, as this will use the same motors that are generating noise, it may not be a solution for you.

To reduce focussing noise, your options would probably be to either continue manually focussing the lens, or buy a new lens that produces less noise when focussing. Canons lenses with STM in the name have motors that allow near-silent focusing when shooting video, so you may want to have a look at them in particular.

Example STM lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

EOS Utility can remotely adjust focus only when the lens is set to AF, because it works by driving the lens focus motor. In EOS Utility, the focus adjustment arrows let you nudge focus remotely, but this is still using the lens motor, so it won’t solve noise if that motor is what you’re hearing.

If the lens is switched to MF, EOS Utility generally won’t manually turn the focus ring for you—you’d need to set focus on the lens itself before recording.

So your practical options are:

  • pre-focus manually on the camera/lens before filming, or
  • use a quieter focusing lens.

For Canon video use, lenses with STM motors are commonly recommended because they focus much more quietly than older designs.
