Can a swollen GoPro battery be fixed, or should it be replaced?

Some GoPro batteries have started to swell slightly, enough that they can stick in the camera. Can a swollen lithium-ion GoPro battery be safely shrunk back to normal, or does it need to be discarded? What's the safest way to handle and dispose of it?

I suppose this is Li-Ion battery. And if it's bloated find a place for battery recycling and throw it there. And replace it with new/normal battery.

If you try to shrink it, you may set up spontaneous combustion of the battery.

Also if the battery is bloated like this it may spontaneously combust on its own.

No. A swollen GoPro lithium-ion battery cannot be safely repaired or “shrunk” back to normal.

Any visible swelling means the battery is damaged and is now a safety hazard. Continued use, charging, puncturing, squeezing, or trying to force it back into shape can cause failure, including fire. If a battery is swelling enough to stick in the camera, stop using it immediately.

The correct action is to replace it and dispose of the swollen battery through the proper local e-waste or damaged lithium-battery recycling process. Do not put it in normal household trash.

If it’s still in the camera, handle it carefully and avoid crushing or piercing it while removing it. Once removed, store it somewhere nonflammable and isolated until you can take it to an approved disposal point.
