Can a Fujifilm X camera display a JPEG copied onto the SD card from a computer?

I want a reliable way to mark an SD card as "safe to format" after my import script has verified the files were copied. My idea was to have the computer write a simple JPEG to the card, such as a green image saying "safe to format," so I could confirm that in-camera before formatting later.
However, my Fujifilm X camera does not seem to display images I create and copy onto the card. Is there a required folder structure, metadata, thumbnail, or EXIF information needed for a Fuji camera to recognize and play back a computer-generated image?

I don't know what is required to recognize the "foreign" image, probably something in the Exif... but for your goal, just create the image with your message, with appropriate background, and take a picture of it when showing on the home computer screen. Then it is already in the camera.

There’s no clear, reliable way from the provided answers to guarantee that a Fujifilm X camera will display an arbitrary computer-generated image. Many cameras expect specific DCIM folder structure, filenames, EXIF, and sometimes thumbnail data, and Fuji may reject files that weren’t created in-camera.
The practical workaround suggested is simple: create your “safe to format” graphic on your computer, display it full-screen, and photograph that screen with the Fuji. Because the camera created the file itself, it will be stored in the expected format and location and should display normally in playback.
So while it may be possible to mimic the exact metadata and thumbnail structure, it’s not a dependable method unless you reverse-engineer Fuji’s requirements. Taking a photo of the message is the safest and easiest solution.
