I have an older Canon XL1 SD MiniDV camcorder and want to know whether its lens can be used on newer Canon DSLR bodies such as the 5D, 7D, or other EOS cameras that shoot 1080p HD video. Will the XL1 lens mount and cover the sensor properly, or would I need to use newer EF or EF-S lenses instead?

No the XL 1 lens will not work with any Canon DSLR as it projects a much smaller image circle and is designed to sit much closer to the sensor than SLR lenses, which have to accommodate a mirror.

The good news is that full HD video is only 2 megapixels, so any EF or EFs mount lens will provide more than enough resolution for anybody's HD needs.

No. A Canon XL1 lens is not compatible with Canon DSLR bodies like the 5D or 7D.

The XL1 lens was designed for a camcorder system with a much smaller image circle, and it sits closer to the sensor than an SLR/DSLR lens can. Canon DSLR bodies use EF or EF-S mount lenses that must leave room for the camera’s mirror, so the XL1 lens will not mount or function properly on those cameras.

If you want to shoot 1080p HD on an EOS DSLR, you’ll need DSLR lenses instead—typically EF or EF-S, depending on the camera body. Also, 1080p video only requires about 2 megapixels of resolution, so standard Canon DSLR lenses have more than enough resolving power for HD video.
