Can a Canon EOS RP keep shooting normally while connected to a PC for USB photo transfer?

I want to use a Canon EOS RP with a PC or Raspberry Pi so photos transfer automatically right after they are taken. Will the camera continue to operate normally while it stays connected over USB and transfers files? Also, can remote control still trigger the shutter and adjust settings while connected?

As far as I can tell (EOS R7 connected with Entangle on a Linux PC)

  • No if there is a continuous preview
  • Yes otherwise

However an app in the PC can definitely trigger the camera (as well as setting aperture/speed) as part of the USB connection protocol.

In general, yes: over USB the camera can still be remotely controlled, and software on the computer can trigger the shutter and change settings such as aperture and shutter speed.

The main limitation mentioned is live/continuous preview. If a continuous preview stream is active, normal operation may be restricted. Without continuous preview, shooting and transfer should work normally.

So for your EOS RP/Raspberry Pi workflow, the practical answer is:

  • automatic transfer after capture: generally yes
  • remote shutter control over USB: yes
  • changing exposure settings remotely: yes
  • full normal operation while continuous live preview is running: not necessarily

Exact behavior can depend on the software you use on the computer/Raspberry Pi.
