I need a simple DIY lighting setup for photographing dresses and other clothing on a mannequin for an online store. I already use a small light box for smaller items. Can I use the same idea on a larger scale, and what basic setup would work well?

Yes — it’s basically the same idea on a larger scale: use a large, soft light source to keep the lighting even and flattering. A simple DIY approach is to bounce a small flash off a large neutral-colored wall. That creates broad, diffused light similar to a light tent, but for larger subjects like dresses on a mannequin.
Compared with a small light box, the light may be a bit more directional, so you can expect some soft shadows behind the mannequin. Keeping the wall neutral in color helps avoid color casts on the clothing.
If possible, position the mannequin a little away from the background to reduce shadows and keep the light looking clean and even.
