Are vertical scratches on scanned negatives more likely from the lab than from my camera?

I shot several rolls in an old SLR and got prints/scans back from a reputable lab, but some frames have obvious damage. In one example there is a strong vertical scratch near the right side of the image, and the negative edge appears nicked at the same position. There are also a few small blotches on some frames. Similar marks appear on multiple films from the same batch.

Because the marks run vertically in the image, and one example is from the middle of the roll, I’m wondering whether this is more likely processing/handling damage at the lab rather than something caused by my camera when loading or shooting. Is that a fair conclusion?

Dirt scratches would go lengthwise on a horizontal or top-to-bottom on a vertical. It's not likely your camera. The two really bad scratches appear at about the same place -- I'd guess it's to do with something in the lab. Ask them.

Out of curiosity, why film at this point in time?

Based on the mark direction and the repeated damage in a similar area, it’s more likely lab handling or processing damage than your camera.

A scratch caused by dirt or a camera transport issue usually follows the film travel direction. On a typical 35mm frame, that means scratches would tend to run lengthwise along the film rather than appear as vertical lines in the image. Since your bad scratches show up at about the same place on multiple frames, that points more toward something in the lab or during scanning/handling.

The edge nick lining up with the scratch also supports the idea that the film was damaged after exposure, possibly during processing or cutting. The small blotches could also be residue, drying marks, or handling issues.

So yes: your assessment sounds reasonable, and it would be fair to ask the lab about it.
