Affordable ways to protect a Canon S100 from heavy dust at Burning Man

I want to bring a Canon S100 to Burning Man, but I’m concerned the desert dust could damage it. I looked at a DiCAPac waterproof case as a possible low-cost solution, but I’m worried the thick plastic may make the camera awkward to use or hurt image quality. Are these cases practical for a compact camera in very dusty conditions, or is there a better budget-friendly option? I also have an older Canon 20D, but I’m not sure an SLR would actually handle dust any better.

I'd think about getting an Olympus tough:

You can buy one for not much more than a waterproof case, and the ergonomics will be a lot better. I have a previous-previous generation of the Olympus waterproof, shockproof, etc. cameras, and it's great for those times when I don't want to endanger a larger camera.

I would not count on an SLR like your 20D being any better at dust protection. From my understanding of burning man, dust will get into anything and everything.

A DiCAPac-style waterproof case may protect the camera, but usability can be compromised by the plastic enclosure. Based on the feedback here, a more practical option is a rugged compact such as an Olympus Tough. These cameras are built for harsh conditions and will usually be much easier to handle than shooting through a bag-style case.

Also, don’t assume your older DSLR will resist dust better. In very dusty environments, dust can get into almost anything, and an SLR may actually be less convenient to protect and carry.

If your goal is affordable protection without sacrificing too much usability, a dedicated rugged point-and-shoot is likely the better fit than putting the S100 in a waterproof pouch.
