Accidentally powered a Sony A7S II with 20V instead of 9V — is it repairable?

I was powering my Sony A7S II with an aftermarket battery coupler and an external battery set to 9V. By mistake, the battery output was changed to 20V before I turned the camera on. The camera would not power up, and it still will not turn on now.

If a camera receives too much voltage through a dummy battery/coupler, is there any realistic troubleshooting I can do at home, or is professional service the only option? If it is repairable, what kind of repair is usually needed?

I think you really know the answer here in your heart. You broke it. Pretty much the only place that can fix it is the vendor — Sony. The electronics are fried. Someone needs to figure out what exactly what components are dead and replace them. Possibly Sony will do this for less than the cost of a whole new camera — but I wouldn't bet on it.

If 20V was fed into a camera expecting around 9V through a dummy battery setup, the most likely outcome is electrical damage. In the best case, a protective fuse or similar component failed first. In the worst case, other power circuitry was damaged as well.

There’s usually no meaningful home fix for this unless you have advanced electronics repair skills and board-level diagnostics. Most camera repair providers will diagnose the damaged section and, if possible, replace the affected board rather than repair individual parts.

So the practical next step is professional service, ideally through Sony or an authorized repair center. They can determine whether only one board was damaged or whether the repair cost is too high to justify.

For the future, use a properly regulated power source and coupler designed specifically for the camera to reduce the risk of over-voltage damage.
