Megapixels:
A megapixel is one million pixels. It is commonly used to describe the resolution of digital cameras. For example, a 7.2 megapixel camera is capable of capturing roughly 7,200,000 pixels. The higher the megapixel number, the more detail the camera can capture. Therefore, the megapixel count is a significant specification to look for when buying a digital camera.

The camera has a gap-less lens design that enables greater light gathering and offers superfine photo quality across the sensor plane. It has an Expansive Dynamic Range and a wide extended ISO range of 409,600. This Sony camera has a superb 25-point contrast-detention AF system that gives you elegant imaging. The camera not only captures top-class still images, but also is capable of shooting videos in 4K resolutions with an optional external recorder over HDMI. It also captures Full HD 1080p videos in XAVC S format at 50 Mbps at multiple frame rates. The S-Log2 gamma gives you greater video recording capabilities by expanding the effective dynamic range during recording. The 3 inch 921.6K-dot tilting LCD and 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder provides magnificent and super sharp monitoring and reviewing capabilities.

Optics and Focus

The Sony Alpha a7S has an E-Mount Full Frame lens mount. Along with these lenses, you can also use an A series lens with optional adapters. You get a wide range of Carl Zeiss and G series lenses to use with the camera. This Sony camera has been designed to give you premium quality imaging with its full frame sensor and many features that many of the high-end DSLR cameras don’t have. The Fast Intelligent AF system offers ultra-fine image quality in illumination as low as EV -4. The camera has a wide 25-point focus range with center-weighted, flexible spot, and zone focusing options. It also comes loaded with Auto focusing options like Single shot AF, Continuous Shot AF, Direct Manual Focus, and Manual Focus.

Sensor and Display

The Sony Alpha a7S packs in a full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor with a resolution of 12.2 MP. It is powered by the BIONZ X image processor that enables high speed recording and processing of images. The camera also allows you to shoot at an ISO range of 50 to 409,600 with less noise and offers 15.3 stops of dynamic range. The sensor has extra large pixels that collect more light than regular sensors and produce images with magnificent details and extremely high quality. This sensor is optimized to produce 4K and Full HD videos. The Direct Pixel Readout technology enables usage of the entire width of the full frame sensor without binning or skipping pixels. This Sony camera has a 3 inch tilting LCD screen with high resolution of 921.6K dots. You also get a 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. While the viewfinder helps you accurately compose your shots, the display lets you review them.

Images and Video

Get an image quality that is truly remarkable with the Sony Alpha a7S. The camera has the latest imaging technology that facilitates better image reproduction. The new generation RGB color and gap-less on-chip lens design gives you good sensitivity and low noise levels. Control Specifications
ISO Speed: Still images: ISO 100-102400, Movies: ISO 200-102400 equivalent (both expandable to 409600, for still: expandable down to 50)
ISO Speed:
The ISO speed setting dictates sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO speed, the more sensitive the film or digital sensor is to light. Higher ISOs have the effect of noise in an image. The actual ISO at which the noise occurs varies from camera to camera. Low ISOs are generally used for brighter lighting conditions and high ISOs are often used for low light or action shots.

Exposure Compensation: +/-5.0 EV (in 1/3 EV or 1/2 EV steps), with exposure compensation dial: +/-3.0 EV (in 1/3 EV steps)
Exposure Compensation:
Refers to the option for the user to override the internal light meter in the camera to either OVER or UNDER expose based on middle/18% gray. This is especially useful when photographing either extremely white/bright scenes or when in very dark/dimly lit scenarios.
