OVERVIEW

A whole new level of camera intelligence from new AI processing unit

State-of-the-art AI processing with deep learning uses detailed information about human forms and poses to dramatically improve the camera’s subject recognition accuracy and make full use of its potential resolution. AI subject recognition has been expanded to include a number of new subject types, including vehicles and insects.

Next-generation AF with Real-time Recognition autofocus

The α7R V's AF system delivers dramatically enhanced overall performance, drawing on major improvements in subject recognition performance. Deep learning technology supports powerful Real-time Recognition AF as well as more reliable Real-time Tracking which is supported by higher Fast Hybrid AF performance over a wider area.

61.0 MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor

This newest generation of the α7R series continues the pursuit of high image resolution, delivering the highest resolution at low sensitivity in the series thus far. The 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor with 61.0 million pixels and the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing engine are used to their fullest potential to deliver extraordinary resolution and fine subject detail.

BIONZ XR™ image processor for up to 8xprocessing speed

With up to eight times the processing power of its predecessor, the new BIONZ XR processes huge volumes of image data while minimizing latency and markedly boosting the camera’s movie and still-image processing power.

Outstanding filmmaking with 8K 24p/25p and 4K 60p/50p

The XAVC HS format enables in-camera recording of high-resolution, high-quality 8K (7680 x 4320) 24p/25p movies with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, bringing out the very best in Sony's lenses and taking full advantage of the resolution provided by the sensor and full-pixel readout. Even the finest subject details are faithfully captured. Full frame and Super 35mm formats can be selected for 4K movie recording. Full pixel readout in the Super 35mm mode without the need for pixel binning makes 6.2x oversampling possible for 4K movies. The XAVC S-I (All-Intra) or the XAVC HS format is supported, with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling

Advanced optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization for 8-step compensation

The α7R V has been upgraded to offer up to 8 steps of stabilization in the body alone, for the first time in the α series. A new stabilization algorithm provides precise detection and control right down to the single-pixel level, taking full advantage of the sensor's 61.0 megapixel resolution to bring out the finest subject details. This achieves effective stabilization for slow-shutter shots of interiors or night scenes where it is preferable to avoid the need for increased sensitivity.

Unique 4-axis LCD monitor combining tilting convenience and side-opening flexibility

Sony's newly developed 4-axis multi-angle monitor combines the utility of a conventional tilting monitor with side-opening vari-angle flexibility. It allows greater shooting freedom by providing unrestricted angle adjustment in both horizontal and vertical orientations.

Selectable large/medium/small RAW image sizes and quality

The α7R V now supports the lossless RAW format, with three selectable pixel counts - L (60M), M (26M), and S (15M). Both M and S sizes offer the same resolution in full-frame and APS-C fields of view, for simpler post-production workflow.

Active Mode image stabilization for stable handheld movie shooting

Active Mode provides strong image stabilization for handheld movie shooting. In addition to in-body stabilization, compatible lenses with their own built-in image stabilisation coordinate with the camera body for highly effective control, allowing even handheld telephoto shots.

Improved Pixel Shift Multi Shooting responds to changing conditions

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting takes advantage of precision in-body image stabilization system control. Up to 16 pixel-shifted images are captured and later composited using a computer to achieve overwhelming resolution in a single image. With the latest version of Imaging Edge Desktop™ software, small pixel-level movements are automatically detected and corrected.

Human pose estimation utilizes subject form data recognition

The α7R V uses subject form data to recognize movement, providing a roughly 60% improvement in human eye recognition. Human pose estimation uses learned human forms and postures to precisely recognize not just eyes, but body and head position, making it possible to lock onto and track a subject facing away from the camera or wearing a mask, for example.

Improved accuracy of WB control with Visible Light and IR sensor

The α7R V's AWB function has evolved in tandem with the camera's AI capabilities. In addition to the Visible Light + IR sensor on the front of the body, the camera's AI processing unit helps to achieve more accurate white balance in difficult lighting, such as when the subject is in shadow.

Consistently accurate exposure and color

The latest BIONZ XR engine achieves even better exposure control and color reproduction accuracy. A new AE algorithm is capable of detecting the skin area in faces and controlling exposure accordingly when shooting stills and movies.

Precise image stabilization compensation at the single-pixel level

A new stabilization algorithm provides precise detection and control right down to the single-pixel level, taking full advantage of the sensor's 61.0 megapixel resolution to bring out the finest subject details.

Faster, more precise wide-area AF even in low light

The processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms achieve notably improved AF performance. Up to 693 phase-detection points in a high-density array cover approximately 79% of the image area. The latest AF algorithms enable high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV -4.0 in AF-S mode. The α7R V also includes a Focus Priority mode for more reliable AF in low light or when using smaller apertures.

Focus bracketing with up to 299 sequentially shifted focus points

The camera will automatically shoot up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points, with custom intervals and sequence specified by the user. Pick the perfect shot, or post-process multiple shots to achieve creative composites with impossible focus depth.

Continuously shoot up to 583 compressed RAW images at 10 fps

Continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with full AF/AE tracking is possible with the mechanical or electronic shutter. The camera can shoot up to 583 compressed RAW images at this speed.

Full-pixel readout for 8K movies with incredible resolution

The XAVC HS format enables in-camera recording of high-resolution 8K 24p (25p) movies with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, bringing out the very best in Sony's lenses and taking full advantage of the potential resolution provided by the sensor and full-pixel readout.

Precise, versatile external flash control

When a compatible Sony external flash unit is used with the camera's auto white balance function, the white balance is adjusted to produce natural skin tones on faces based on the balance between the flash output and ambient light. TTL flash control is applied up to 10 fps continuous shooting so that stable illumination and consistent exposure are achieved for each frame, even when tracking fast-moving subjects in scenes where the light changes dramatically or the angle of view is changed.

Expressive S-Cinetone™ S-Log3, HLG and 10 Creative Look presets in-camera

Based on the technology of CineAlta™ cameras such as the acclaimed VENICE, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin tones, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights.

S-Log3 gamma curve with 14+ stops of latitude

The S-Log3 gamma curve emphasizes gradation characteristics from shadows to mid-gray (18% gray), achieving up to 14+ stops of latitude. Three color gamut settings are provided: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine. These advanced settings make it easy to match footage shot on the α7R V with footage shot on VENICE and VENICE 2 digital cinema cameras or FX series cameras equipped with S-Log3 gamma curve settings, for smooth, efficient editing.

Real-time Tracking AF subject recognition for movies

Thanks to substantial improvements in subject recognition, the camera can provide more reliable Real-time Tracking, keeping track of specified subjects with precise focus, including focus on the subject's eyes. Subject recognition is now enabled for movie shoots as well as still-image photography, for fast, stable focus when shooting. Even with subject recognition OFF, touch operation allows subjects to be acquired and tracked based on color, pattern (luminance) and distance (depth).

Active Mode for enhanced movie image stabilization

Active Mode provides strong image stabilization for handheld movie shooting. In addition to in-body stabilization, compatible lenses with their own built-in image stabilisation coordinate with the camera body for highly effective control, allowing even handheld telephoto shots.

Breathing compensation for consistent angle of view

When shooting movies, breathing compensation uses Clear Image Zoom technology to maintain a consistent angle of view19, suppressing changes that may occur due to shifts in focus position. Breathing metadata can also be used in post production

QXGA viewfinder with the highest resolution in its class

The 9.44 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a 1.6x improvement in resolution, 0.90x viewfinder magnification, a 41° diagonal FOV, and a selectable 120 fps setting for minimal motion blur.

Fast Wi-Fi for PC tethering, FTP and smartphone transfers

Built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) allows communication on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and provides 2x2 MIMO support for fast and stable data transfer and reliable communication. The camera can be connected to a computer via Wi-Fi for wireless PC Remote (tethered) shooting using the “Remote” function of Sony’s latest Imaging Edge Desktop application, giving the user greater freedom of movement on location or in the studio. 2.4 GHz or 5GHz14 Wi-Fi bands can be selected as required.

UVC/UAC support for high-quality webcam applications

Easy streaming in 4K is possible with a UVC/UAC compatible smartphone or PC via USB connection, so the α7R V can be used as a high-resolution webcam.

Effective heat dissipation for extended recording times

Heat generated by the image sensor, image processor, and AI processing unit is effectively dissipated to prevent overheating. One element of this is the graphite material formed into a unique Σ (sigma) shape and built into the image stabilization unit. This allows the image sensor, a major source of heat, to move freely during stabilization while effectively conducting heat away, achieving better heat dissipation. 8K 24p (25p) 10-bit 4:2:0 video can be recorded continuously for approximately 30 minutes.

High reliability in challenging working environments

For more robust outdoor use, sealing is provided at all body seams, buttons and the battery compartment cover. A carefully designed lens lock button and cushioning around the mount also help resist dust and moisture.

New anti-dust system increases dust removal efficiency

An ultrasonic actuator causes the filter in front of the image sensor to oscillate at more than 70,000 cycles per second, effectively removing dust and particles from the filter surface. There is also a Shutter When Power Off function that closes the shutter for lens changes.

Durable magnesium alloy chassis, reliable mechanical shutter

A lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy is used for the top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover, with durable construction that keeps the camera operating smoothly in hard-working environments. A shutter unit with a fast-response motor minimizes mechanical shutter vibration that can cause blur, while allowing high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10 fps. The shutter is quiet and has been tested for durability in excess of 500, 000 shutter cycles.

USB PD (Power Delivery) supports fast charging

The α7R V supports USB PD (Power Delivery), allowing higher power to be supplied from an external source. A USB charger or mobile battery that supports USB PD can be connected to the camera's USB Type-C® port, supplying power or charging the internal battery at three to four times the rate of the previous model.

Recycled materials

Sony is working towards the use of non-plastic packaging materials, with plant-based non-woven fabrics as well as recyclable materials. As for the camera itself, no non-recyclable resources are used in our SORPLAS™ material, which is repeatedly recyclable, durable, and high in quality. Recyclable plastics are also used as much as possible, reducing stress on the environment without compromising performance or functionality in any way.
