Focus and Optics
This camera comes with the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It includes 6 optical elements arranged in 5 groups. The Canon AE-1 Program SLR employs the through-the-lens center-weighted exposure metering. You can choose one of the three exposure modes provided in the camera. The Program AE mode of the Canon AE-1 optimizes the shutter and aperture according to the light intensity in the scene. The other two modes are based on shutter priority and manual mode. Thanks to the AE lock, the overexposure, which occurs due the bright background or foreground, is avoided during metering. You have to use the rotating dial for switching between the AE modes.
Sensor and Screen
The fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder offers a screen coverage of 94%. A split-image rangefinder is integrated into the viewfinder design, which can be used when focusing on the subject. The viewfinder shows relevant information such as aperture, auto-exposure setting or camera shake indicator, flash ready indication, and a stopped-down metering index. The eyepiece diopter of the camera is set to -1 m.
Image and Video
This camera is designed to be used with 35mm film rolls having a speed from ASA 12 to 3200. The single-stroke lever, which has a 120° throw and a 30° stand-off, is provided to advance the film. The self-additive frame counter resets to "S" if you open the camera back.
Other Features
The hot shoe can be used for connecting an electronic flash to the camera. After mounting the flash, it can be synchronized with the shutter speed at 1/60th of a second. You can also use cord-type flash devices via PC sync terminal. The self-timer allows you to set the shutter release delay for up to 10 seconds. You can cancel the timer by simply pressing the battery check button or shift the main switch to "L". Check the depth of field in the image by pressing the DOF preview button. As the camera has an interchangeable screen design, you can use a variety of focusing screens according to your requirement. The camera is powered by a single 6V alkaline or a lithium battery.
