Megapixels:
A megapixel is one million pixels. It is commonly used to describe the resolution of digital cameras. For example, a 7.2 megapixel camera is capable of capturing roughly 7,200,000 pixels. The higher the megapixel number, the more detail the camera can capture. Therefore, the megapixel count is a significant specification to look for when buying a digital camera.

Optics and Focus

The Nikon D5500 comes with an 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR II lens whose optical construction involves 11 elements in 8 groups. A Super Integrated Coating is applied on the lens to reduce ghosting and flare. A seven-blade diaphragm lends a rounded bokeh effect on the background of images. With the Silent Wave Motor built into the lens, the camera can perform quiet autofocusing. Moreover, the Vibration Reduction Image Stabilizer reduces the incidences of camera shakes, thereby generating pictures with less blur. There are 39 AF points in the camera. The maximum shutter speed of the camera stands at 1/4000th of a second and the ISO sensitivity at 25600.

Sensor and Screen

The Nikon D5500 has a 24.2 MP CMOS sensor that captures crystal clear images and vibrant videos. The TTL exposure-metering system uses the RGB sensor for analyzing scenes and getting the best exposure and color in photographs. With the 3.2-inch Vari-angle touchscreen LCD, the camera lets you conveniently observe scenes before capturing them. The LCD provides a viewing angle of 170° and automatically adjusts to the brightness of the surroundings. The Eye-level Pentamirror Single-Lens Reflex viewfinder offers an alternative option for viewing scenes before shooting. It has a 95% coverage on both vertical and horizontal axes.

Image and Video

This Nikon camera can capture images in 12- and 14-bit RAW formats. As for video recording, it can shoot in full HD with a resolution of 1920×1080 dpi at 60 fps. The recorded videos are saved in the MOV file format. Additionally, you may directly edit the recorded footage on the camera itself before taking them forward for post-production. The camera’s retouch menu offers you amazing options for getting creative and enhancing the captured images. You may also opt from the 16 scene modes for playing with the mood and ambience of the captured scene.

Other Features

The D5500 camera from Nikon has built-in Wi-Fi for transferring images to any other device. You may use the Mobile Utility App without hotspot for not just sharing images and videos with your friends, but also using your smartphone or tablet as a secondary screen for the camera. The camera has a built-in flash with 10 flash sync modes. This camera can produce 820 shots on a full charge of an EN-EL14a or EN-EL14 rechargeable Li-ion battery.
