Overview

The Sony Alpha a5100 Mirrorless Digital Camera is a versatile tool built for both photo and video capture. At the center is the 24.3 MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor that takes the aid of the Bionz X image processor to render vibrant pictures with rich tonal quality and minimal noise. The camera is capable of recording videos in 1080p at 60 fps. You can also take burst shots for up to 75 frames at 6 fps. The camera has a 921.6k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD for easy image composition from low and high angles. In the Fast Hybrid Autofocus system, a Spatial Object Detection algorithm is employed to provide improved response and accuracy. The Wi-Fi connectivity works best for remote shooting, especially when the camera is mounted on a gimbal or high stand. This Sony mirrorless camera also supports TRILUMINOS display devices by incorporating their compatible color support.

Optics and Focus

The Sony a5100 is made for Sony E-mount lenses. Its working range of EV -1.0 to EV 20.0 allows you to take photos or record videos in various lighting conditions. The Fast Hybrid Autofocus system employs 179 phase detection and 25 contrast detection points that benefit picturization of both stationary and moving objects in a cluttered scenery. The camera also provides touch AF support for shifting the focus point by simple taps on the rear LCD. Focus peaking is also available in the manual mode for attaining critical focus on an object. You can shift from the traditional mechanical shutter to the electronic shutter for silent operation. This mirrorless camera features the clear image zoom that allows you to get results of a telephoto lens with your wide-angle prime lens.

Sensor and Screen

This Sony mirrorless camera uses the 24.3MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor that has a gapless on-chip lens structure to produce images with the highest quality possible in its class. It ensures edge-to-edge sharpness as well as enhanced light gathering performance. The 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD offers 921.6K-dot resolution live view of the scene. Moreover, the tilting design allows you to frame the shot from a high or low angle with ease.

Image and Video

The a5100 mirrorless camera from Sony takes photos with a maximum resolution of 6000×4000 pixels. You have the option to select the JPEG format for quick sharing or the RAW format for fine-tuning the image look in post. The Bionz X image processor boosts the camera performance to handle the load during 1080p60 video recording and 6 fps continuous shooting. Additionally, the image processor works in tandem with the sensor to reduce noise. The Auto Object Framing handles the image composition by cropping the image as per the subject position in the frame. Other image enhancement features such as Dynamic Range Optimizer, Hand-held Twilight Mode, Anti-Motion Blur, Superior Auto mode, and Soft Skin Effect let you obtain high-quality images every time.

Other Features

The Sony a5100 comes with built-in Wi-Fi that allows image transfer to smartphones. You may also link the handheld device via NFC for remote control. The camera has a 4K slideshow creation tool that produces a highlight reel of different photographs taken with the camera. You can playback this highlight reel on an HDTV by connecting the a5100 via the HDMI port. The camera has a built-in flash with a maximum synchronization of up to 1/160th of a second. With the customizable buttons, you can plan the control layout as per your working style. The camera comes with an NP-FW50 Li-ion battery that allows up to 400 shots per charge and can be internally charged via the USB-C port.
