Overview

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 Mirrorless Digital Camera comes in an all-new color scheme that matches the overall traditional design. This mirrorless camera features an M.Zuiko Digital ED 14–42mm lens, a SanDisk 16 GB SDHC card, camera case, and strap. The 16 MP Live MOS sensor hails from Olympus’s flagship models. It teams up with the TruePic VIII image processor to provide UHD 4K videos at 30 fps and high-resolution stills. The continuous shooting mode allows you to capture consecutive shots at 8.6 fps. The high-speed FAST AF system offers accuracy in subject tracking, while the focus peaking function ensures easy adjustment in the manual mode. The 3-axis image stabilization makes handheld photography and video shooting easy by reducing shakes. This stylish Olympus camera captures approximately 350 shots per charge of the inbuilt BLS-50 Li-ion battery.

Optics and Focus

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 EZ lens is included in the kit. You can fit other Micro Four Thirds mount lenses as well to this camera. The kit lens has an optical design of 8 elements in 7 groups. Three aspherical elements, an ED, and an S-HR element are placed among the rest of the glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing. The ZERO lens coating brings down the effects of ghosting and flare. The electronic zoom mechanism shifts the focal length smoothly while maintaining consistency. The Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) AF system remains quiet at the time of focusing on an object. There are up to 121 contrast detection AF points in the FAST autofocus system that deliver high precision when taking a photo or recording a video. The Face Detection AF and Eye Priority AF also simplify the focus work. The manual focus assists and the focus-peaking function takes you closer to achieving critical focus in the manual mode.

Sensor and Screen

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 sports a 16 MP Live MOS sensor that renders colors accurately. It has a supersonic wave filter that cleans dust off the surface to maintain the image quality. The 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD provides a live view of the shot in 1037K-dot resolution. You can tilt the LCD from -180° to +80° when working from high and low angles. The LCD brightness is adjustable in ±7 levels. Different display modes such as histogram and level gauge offer assistance in image or video capture.

Image and Video

This Olympus mirrorless camera captures still shots in JPEG and RAW formats with a maximum resolution of 4608×3456 pixels. An MPO format is included for taking pictures in 3D. The PEN E-PL9 records videos in UHD 4K quality with a maximum frame rate of 30 fps. You may freeze a fast-paced action in series of stills with the 8.6 fps continuous shooting mode. The TruePic VIII image processor speeds up the camera’s performance to support video shooting and burst image captures. Various art filters are included in the camera for modifying the image and video look. Select the E-Portrait auto mode to take close-up shots with soft skin tones.

Other Features

The Olympus PEN E-PL9 features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options that allow image transfers to up to 4 smartphones. You may also take advantage of the wireless functionality to control the camera from a distance. The integrated microphone with wind noise reduction ensures clarity in the recorded audio. Use the built-in flash or mount an external strobe on the hot shoe for clicking photos in dim light. The included SanDisk 18 GB SDHC card comes in handy when you are short of storage space. It offers a maximum read speed of 80 Mbps and protects data from accidental loss. Other accessories such as the camera strap and carry case add to the overall convenience of transporting the camera.

Elements / Groups:
The individual pieces of glass that form the overall optical construction. Most lenses have between four and eleven elements to bend the light rays to ensure a perfectly formed image appears on the light sensitive surface, such as a film or CCD. The elements are arranged in groups and may be seen in specification sheets as, for example, 6 elements in 4 groups. That configuration may have two single elements and the other four grouped in pairs.
