Megapixels:
A megapixel is one million pixels. It is commonly used to describe the resolution of digital cameras. For example, a 7.2 megapixel camera is capable of capturing roughly 7,200,000 pixels. The higher the megapixel number, the more detail the camera can capture. Therefore, the megapixel count is a significant specification to look for when buying a digital camera.

Overview

The Nikon COOLPIX W300 Digital Camera is designed for underwater photography. It comes with a Nikkor 5× optical zoom lens that has a variable focal length of 24–120mm and an aperture range of f/2.8–4.9. The camera operates on a 16 MP BSI CMOS sensor that offers high-quality image capture and 4K video recording at 30 fps. This underwater camera has an ISO range of 100–6400. The continuous shooting mode takes up to 5 still shots at 7 fps. You can use the 3.0-inch LCD screen to compose the scene. With the built-in flash, you can capture well-illuminated images within a range of approximately 17 feet with a wide lens setting. The camera comes with SnapBridge wireless connectivity for transferring images and video or remotely controlling the camera. The camera has a waterproof, shock-proof and freeze-proof design that makes it an ideal choice for travel enthusiasts.

Optics and Focus

The integrated Nikkor 5× optical zoom lens gives a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 24–120mm. You can also vary the aperture from f/2.8 to f/4.9. This zoom lens has 12 elements arranged in 10 groups. The 4× digital zoom can further extend the 5× optical zoom. The camera lens provides a minimum focus distance of 50 cm on normal setting and 1 cm on the macro setting. The shutter speed can be varied from 1 to 1/4000th of a second to take shots of fast-paced subjects such as a school of fishes. Thanks to the Vibration reduction functions, the camera shakes are reduced to prevent image blur and provide a smooth movement in the video.

Sensor and Screen

This Nikon camera functions on a 16.0 MP BSI CMOS sensor that offers vibrant imagery in low-light. Its 3.0-inch LCD screen gives a 921k-dot resolution live view of the scene. The LCD has an anti-glare coating to facilitate viewing in bright conditions.

Image and Video

The camera can take 16 MP JPEG images with a maximum resolution of 4608×3456 dpi. In movie mode, the camera records 4K quality videos at 30 fps and 1080p videos at 60 fps. The camera can capture 5 burst photos at 7 fps. There are various creative modes and special effects in the camera. It can also mimic the view of a fish-eye lens, miniaturize the scene, and adjust the dynamic range or saturation. The Smart Portrait Mode and Glamour Retouch are specially optimized for portrait photography.

Other Features

The built-in flash offers an effective range of up to 17 feet on the wide lens setting and 14.7 feet on the macro setting. You can also use the LED as flashlight. The camera features SnapBridge wireless connectivity that allows you to send captured photos to smartphones or tablets via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Moreover, your current geo-location can be tagged to the pictures by enabling the built-in GPS. By pressing the dedicated tool button, you can use the GPS and eCompass features of the camera. The camera modes can also be changed by moving the camera. On a fully charged EN-EL12 Li-ion battery, the camera can capture up to 280 shots. The battery takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to get completely charged.

Elements / Groups:
The individual pieces of glass that form the overall optical construction. Most lenses have between four and eleven elements to bend the light rays to ensure a perfectly formed image appears on the light sensitive surface, such as a film or CCD. The elements are arranged in groups and may be seen in specification sheets as, for example, 6 elements in 4 groups. That configuration may have two single elements and the other four grouped in pairs.
