Its equipped with Nikon’s advanced Vibration Reduction (VR II) for remarkable image clarity even when handheld shooting or in demanding lighting situations. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II is a powerful, versatile photo and video partner.

Remarkable 11x zoom versatility. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II is an ideal one-lens solution for DX-format D-SLRs. Its powerful 11x zoom means you can capture just about any shot you encounter or imagine. Exceptional performance

Nikon technology for better shots. What’s versatility without quality? The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II is as powerful as it is versatile. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.5 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture. Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements maximizes optical performance while minimizing chromatic aberration. Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, and its exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate and ultra-quiet focusing.

ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass

An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.

AS

AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

IF Lens

A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Silent Wave Motor

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.

M/A

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens.

Vibration Reduction

A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.

A nice versatile lens

The Nikon Nikkor 18-200VR lens is a versatile wide ranging zoom. At 18-200mm (27-300mm full-frame equivalent), it covers a pretty wide and useful zoom range. The VR system really helps out in stabilizing the lens from your hand/body vibrations, and is especially helpful once you zoom into the telephoto range. This is a 'one lens to do almost anything'. About the only drawbacks I've found so far are that it is a 'standard' f/stop range, and not a fast lens. But those typically are going to nudge the price upwards well into the 4-digit price range, especially for such a wide zoom range. Even a single prime lens at the telephoto end of things costs more than this zoom (example, the very-nice 180 2.8). Then you'd have to add in a wide-angle prime, and a 'normal' lens, and maybe a mild telephoto as well as the 'longer' telephoto to give you the same range coverage as this lens. It's not a super-wide (the DX crop factor gets you there), but it does reach out pretty far at the telephoto end (200 mm, where the DX crop-factor gives that an equivalent 300mm full-frame). It can focus pretty close, but not as close as a dedicated macro lens. All-in-all, a nice and very versatile lens. I think the previous reviewer has a mismatch between his 'star-rating' and his description, as he rated it only 1-star but praised it in his paragraph.

The very BEST lens for a wide range of subject and nature Photos

I am a Nature Photogorpher and shoot outdoors with not much time to change lenses. I do use this particular lens a great deal of the time. I also take Photos of our Kiwanis Club activities, Church, Chamber of Comerice, and lots of family Photos. This lens gives me a wide range of close and long shots with quality. If I had only one lens, it would be this one. It is superior to any other all around lens. Good Luck Jim Dowsett

Elements / Groups: 16/12
Elements / Groups:
The individual pieces of glass that form the overall optical construction. Most lenses have between four and eleven elements to bend the light rays to ensure a perfectly formed image appears on the light sensitive surface, such as a film or CCD. The elements are arranged in groups and may be seen in specification sheets as, for example, 6 elements in 4 groups. That configuration may have two single elements and the other four grouped in pairs.
