Overview

A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability, the Canon EF 85mm lens produces sharp and clear images at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur, thereby bringing your subject into crisp view. The ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) and fast f/1.8 aperture, meanwhile, helps the subject zip into focus in the viewfinder. And because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected. Best of all, the standard zoom lens--with its natural angle of view and perspective--captures the subject plainly, making it excellent for portraits and images that require a natural depth of field.

The bargain sleeper in the Canon line

I think people over look this lens because of its affordable price and because it's not an "L" lens. I needed a fast, short tele and tok a chance with the 85 F:1.8 and have never been disappointed. I did a series of careful tests. I tripod mounted my camera and tested all of the f-stops. The sharpness and color of the 85mm rivaled the results from my "L" lenses. Quite surprising. Of course, with an F-1.8 lens, you are sure to need the ability to shoot wide open and my example delivers marketable images. Again, quite surprising, Because of the 1.6X magnification on crop-sensor cameras like my 7D, the 85MM becomes about a 135mm lens. Look up the price of a 135mm F-1.8 lens and you see that this Canon short tele becomes a relative bargain. If you shoot portraits or low light subjects like weddings or indoor sports like basketball, this lens could work for you. I recommend it without hesitation if the focal length works for your photography.
