Overview

The Sony RX0 Ultra-Compact Waterproof and Shockproof Camera is the right gadget to help you create a travelogue of your adventurous road trips, with every breathtaking moment captured life-like. This action camera is specially crafted for adventure tourists who love to shoot everything unique that they encounter. Which is why the camera sports a Zeiss Tessar T* 24mm F/4 lens that has a 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS sensor for producing photographs with enviable detail and unparalleled clarity. The camera is designed with a 25-point contrast-detection AF, with which the most desirable areas in the scene are brought alive with sharp focus. The ISO sensitivity can reach up to 12800 for shooting in dim-lit conditions. Moreover, a noise-reduction function keeps image graining low when the ISO is set too high. A DC3.7V battery is supplied with the camera, along with an NP-BJ1 rechargeable battery pack. On a single charge, the camera can capture approximately 240 shots and record up to 35 minutes of video.

Optics and Focus

The Sony RX0 is equipped with the Zeiss Tessar T* 24mm F/4 lens, which is constructed with six aspheric elements arranged in six groups. Thanks to the designing of the lens, the camera is capable of producing images with edge-to-edge clarity and reduced distortions. The lens focus is fixed at 50 cm to infinity. Within the camera itself are the pre-set focus and manual focus options. Additionally, the 25-point contrast-detection AF with flexible spot allows precise focus adjustments. Thanks to a wide ISO range of 125–12800, the camera can produce well-lit photographs, even at night. Also, the RX0 incorporates an anti-distortion shutter that efficiently overcomes the rolling-shutter effect and helps in capturing shots of moving objects with high clarity. This shutter can function at the maximum speed of 1/32000th of a second.

Sensor and Screen

Given that the RX0 action camera from Sony is meant for demanding applications like dance photography, theater photography, and adventure photography, it comes with a 15.3 MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor that helps capture fast-paced events and unexpected movements with precision. For bringing about thrilling effects in the captured footage, the camera is designed to shoot slow-motion videos at an outstanding rate of up to 1000fps. Guiding you through your photography sessions is the 3.8 cm TFT LCD screen that offers a 230,400-dot resolution in a 4:3 aspect ratio. You may tweak the brightness of the screen manually or let it automatically adjust to the ambient lighting.

Image and Video

This Sony action camera includes the BIONZ X image processor that works with an image sensor to lend natural colors to photographs. It improves the tonal gradation and eliminates noise when shooting in low light. The camera can capture 4800×3200 dpi stills in JPEG and RAW formats. In the video mode, it can record 1080p videos at 60 fps. In the Speed Priority Continuous Shooting mode, you can shoot images at a good 16 fps rate. The camera also offers creative styles, like Vivid, Light, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, Night Scene, Autumn Leaves, and Sepia, for further enhancing the uniqueness and attractiveness of each precious capture.

Other Features

The Sony RX0 Ultra-Compact action camera comes with inbuilt WiFi connectivity that uses a 2.4 GHz band transmission for sharing large videos and images to your smartphone. Other alternatives for media sharing are the Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 2.0. An integrated 3.5mm microphone jack facilitates voice recording along with the video. You may use the HDMI output to view the captured videos in stunning 4K. The camera can be taken 33 ft underwater and can withstand impacts from falls from as high as 6.5 ft. It is also crush-proof to the point of enduring weights of up to 200kgf.

Detailed Specifications
Focusing System: Wide [25 points (contrast-detection AF)]; Center; Flexible Spot (S/M/L); Expanded Flexible Spot
Focusing System:
The type of focusing system used to capture a sharp image. Some simple cameras have fixed (infinity) focus. Most modern cameras have autofocus systems which determine the distance to the subject automatically. There are two main types of autofocus: active autofocus, where an infrared light (or a sonar pulse) is emitted by the camera and reflected by the subject, and passive autofocus, where the image transmitted by the lens is analysed for its sharpness by a detector inside the camera.

Minimum Illumination: Auto: 6lux (Shutter Speed 1/30")
Minimum Illumination:
Minimum illumination indicates the minimum amount of light required to see a ‘useful’ image generated by a camera. It is measured with a light meter and the specification is expressed in lux. When comparing minimum illumination specifications, it is important to know the conditions under which measurements were made, because the specifications vary with parameters such as video levels, shutter speed, gain, and F-number.
