Photoshop for Photographers is just that; a class that covers the most used tools and layer techniques that photographers use the most to make their photos look their best!

The class first covers Camera Raw and its most used tools and modules; from basic exposure settings to proper white balance settings. From there, you’ll dive into more of the intermediate and advanced settings and tools of Photoshop; from understanding the selections tools, masks, and blending modes, and compositing HDR images.  It’s a class that is a mix between theory (understanding why certain Photoshop tools and layers behave the way they do) along with applying that theory to hands-on exercises.

You’ll leave not only understanding how Photoshop ‘thinks’ but also with the skills to make your own photos look their best.

Photograph New Jersey's newest national park, the Great Falls National Historic District, with Salvatore Vasapolli!  This workshop includes an excursion to the Great Falls, plus a follow-up creative writing and photographic essay lab at Unique.

This will be an intensive workshop covering the elements involved in creating conceptual and thematic imagery.

Monday, October 29th (6:30am - 3:00pm)
The bus will leave promptly from Unique (Fairfield) at 6:30am and arrive at ESP at approximately 8:30am. At 9:00am, the group will be led on an hour long history tour of the grounds by one of ESP's guides.

Once the tour is completed, Michael will briefly go over lighting, exposure, bracketing, using HDR photography in-camera, and the best locations to capture in each cell block. Attendees may stay with the group or roam through all of the authorized locations at their own pace. Either way, Michael will be around to assist you in capturing some great images within ESP!

Join Adobe Certified instructor Blake Taylor for this hands-on class that will introduce you to Adobe Lightroom Classic CC!

By following a photographic workflow, you’ll first learn how to import digital photos into Lightroom. From there, you’ll learn different ways to manage your photos, make one-click adjustments, and then all the way to making more advanced adjustments using the controls that Lightroom offers. You’ll also experiment with Lightroom’s non-destructive environment by enhancing a variety of photos by working within Lightroom’s Library and Develop modules. If you have ever wanted to perfect your use of speedlights, you won't want to miss this workshop with award-winning photographer Rick Friedman! Whether you are a professional or amateur, you will greatly improve your knowledge of lighting when you learn how to properly utilize speedlights.

We'll begin by creating interesting light with one speedlight and then progress to using multiple speedlights. You'll work with models and use different light modifiers, grip equipment, and radio triggers to obtain the desired lighting effects. If weather permits, we'll also move outside to get different shots along the building. You can plan on leaving feeling empowered to capture great images, no matter what lighting situation you come up against!

*Bring a camera, lenses, on-camera flashes, and lunch/snack.
*Rick will instruct using both Nikon and Canon systems.
*Attendees must already possess an understanding of ISO, shutter speed, aperture (FStop), and the function buttons of their speedlights.

On Saturday, each student should bring a stack of photos (4x6 to 8x10 inch prints only; no digital files) for selection/editing. Ideally, the set will be approximately 100 images on one, two, or maybe three different subjects/themes, which will be edited down to a top twenty during the class. Students leave the class with an education in photo editing AND a professionally executed edit that will cut their large set of images down to a final, tightly edited and clearly defined top twenty.

With the lessons from the seminar in mind, you'll travel to the Sheep Hill Observatory (300 Ross Dr, Boonton, NJ 07005) to meet up with Jim and the rest of the group. It's only about 20 minutes away from Unique, and you'll practice shooting the observatory building and night sky with Jim's help.

America’s Cup racing will return to New York for the first time since 1920 with Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series racing on May 7-8, 2016.  The New York event is one of six events planned during 2016, each featuring thrilling, high-speed competition, as six America’s Cup teams, with the top sailors in the world, vie for points that count towards the final competition for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

On Friday, May 6th, Instructor Mike Zawadzki will hold a seminar at Unique Photo from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.  He'll go over camera settings and shooting tips in preparation for the race on Sunday.

On Sunday, May 8th, you'll have a chance to capture the excitement and action from the waters on our own private yacht!  The Jewel is set to sail along the Hudson River and remain as close to the race as possible.  This is an amazing opportunity to capture shots from different vantage points and spectate the finals.

UPDATE (5/4/16): Due to the high security measures that have been put in place for the race, the Captain has changed The Jewel's point of departure from Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken, NJ to New York's Skyport Marina.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we have now secured a shuttle that will take us from Unique Photo to Sky Point Marina and back, free of charge. If you'd like to reserve a seat for the shuttle, please email us at [email protected].  Seating is limited, so please email ASAP.  Otherwise, we will assume that you'll be meeting everyone at the marina on your own.

Join professional wedding photographer Carlos Alvarado for a hands-on take on wedding photography at Unique.

The day will begin with a quick overview of basic fundamentals, camera setup, and lenses. Carlos will then explain and demonstrate how lighting affects the image for both indoor and outdoor shots. Students will learn about off-camera flash lighting, soft vs. hard lighting, and how to match natural lighting with ambient. Other lessons include color intensity, temperature, and modifiers.

Once lighting is established, students will learn how to see the shots before actually taking them. Carlos will go over how to connect, communicate, and direct the subject, whether it's the bride and groom, bridal party, or family members and friends. Posing, composition, and creative storytelling are all key.

Afterwards, our bride and groom models will come in to allow students the chance to practice shooting with all of the day's lessons in mind. If there's enough time remaining, Carlos will also share some of his post-processing tips.

The Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ is a non-profit organization and one of the premier wild bird rehabilitation centers in the United States. The Trust includes a hospital with state-of-the-art medical facilities, quality exterior housing for several hundred birds, and an education building. A stalwart advocate for birds of prey for three decades, it is now recognized as a national leader in the fields of raptor conservation and avian rehabilitation.

Meet up with Michael Downey at The Raptor Trust for an exciting day of photographing some of the Trust's permanent bird residents! The day will begin with a brief photography seminar with Michael. You'll then have a chance to photograph three different birds, which may include owls, hawks, and falcons. There will be a station set up with a backdrop and continuous lighting, and two other shooting stations with perches: one against a large pine tree, and one with an open field as the backdrop. There will be some time indoors, but the majority of the workshop will be conducted outdoors.

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR LESSON: 5-10 RAW images on your laptop with Photoshop installed. If you don't have a laptop to bring to the lesson, you can email your images to [email protected] ahead of time OR bring the images on a USB thumb drive or card.

Meet up at the East Point Lighthouse (10 Lighthouse Rd, Heislerville, NJ 08324)! The owner will give the group a private tour of the Lighthouse and property. Afterwards, Jennifer will go over useful apps, how she plans her shoots, gear, camera settings, and shooting techniques. Attendees need to bring a fast wide angle lens, sturdy tripod (no travel ones), a corded remote that simply locks, DSLR camera, head lamp, warm clothes, and hiking boots.

For years we've used large soft boxes to give us that soft wraparound light, and it does provide us with a flattering look. However, the drama of small light sources and harsh light can be even more dynamic and compelling.

Join Doug Hansgate for an intensive, full day workshop where you'll use the latest continuous lights and LED technology from Nanlite to create portraits like the old masters of Hollywood. We'll control the light like never before, balancing each light quickly and effectively from our phones and using various modifiers like cookies, flags, gobos, and scrims to produce creative looks. You'll also learn how to create all of the classical forms of portraiture with our two workshop models, as well as see how Doug edits his images (shot in-class) live for maximum effect. After all, photographers capture light... Learn to control it and there are no limits to your creative freedom.

There will be plenty of time for hands-on shooting throughout the day, so please be sure to bring your cameras and favorite portrait lenses.
