    Overview

The Nikon Z6 FX-Format Mirrorless Camera is designed for professional photo and video applications alike. Equipped with a 24.5 MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor, the camera produces 4K videos and high-resolution stills at a faster rate as well as improves the low light sensitivity. The EXPEED 6 image processor also supports the imaging work by boosting the camera performance during the 12 burst shooting and video recording. With the N-Log gamma, the camera records videos in a high dynamic range, retaining highlights and shadow details. This gamma recording function aids you during exposure adjustment when the log gamma picture profile is selected. The 5-axis sensor-shift VR system minimizes camera shakes without cropping the image. Monitor the scene with the 3.2-inch, 2.1m-dot tilting LCD or the 3.6m-dot electronic viewfinder. With the integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, you can send photos to smartphones or remote control the camera.

    Optics and Focus

The Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera supports Z-mount lenses. Its Z-mount ensures fast communication between the camera and lens to maintain consistent autofocus and image processing speed. Moreover, the mount is 17% larger in diameter than the ones in previous full-frame cameras for allowing more light to reach the sensor. A NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/4 S lens is provided with the camera that uses aspherical and Extra-low Dispersion elements to combat various distortions throughout the zoom range. The nanocrystal coating on these element ensures clarity by reducing ghosting and flare. With the stepping AF motor, the lens provides quiet and smooth autofocusing down to 30 cm. Use the programmable control ring to fine-tune the exposure. The 273-point phase-detection AF system maintains the focus on subjects whether they are stationary or in motion. It covers 90% of the imaging area so even if the subjects move to the edge of the frame, the focus remains fixed on them. When recording videos, the camera switches to the Hybrid AF that uses both phase and contrast detection methods. The 5-axis sensor-shift VR image stabilization restricts the amount of camera shakes by 5 stops for Z-mount lenses and 3 stops for F-mount lenses.

    Sensor and Screen

This Nikon Z series mirrorless camera captures photos and videos using a 24.5 MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor. It provides fast readouts and improved low light sensitivity. Moreover, the back-illuminated design of the sensor controls noise at an ISO limit of up to 51200. You can take high or low angle shots with ease using the 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD, which has a 2.1m-dot resolution. Alternatively, the camera has a 3.6m-dot electronic viewfinder that lets you view the scene live with 100% frame coverage. The applied fluorine coat enables you to clean fingerprints, dust, and moisture off the EVF.

    Image and Video

The Nikon Z6 shoots videos in 4K at a frame rate of 30 fps. You can also record 1080 videos up to 120 fps to create stunning slow-motion effects. The camera takes pictures with a maximum resolution of 6000×4000 pixels in JPEG or RAW format. To support the 12 fps RAW burst shooting, the Nikon Z6 uses the EXPEED 6 image processor. The 10-bit N-log gamma records videos in a 12-stop dynamic range so you can add LUTs for color grading it during post-production. You can store the gamma footage directly to an external recorder using the HDMI port. The zebra function highlights the overexposed parts in the image to make easy for you to adjust the exposure when shooting log footage. Switch on the interval timer to take up to 9999 still pictures that can be processed in an editing software to create 4K time-lapse sequences.

    Other Features

The Nikon Z6 seamlessly integrated with your smartphone via the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for quick image transfer. You can choose the Wi-Fi bandwidth from 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. The SnapBrigde 2.5 support gives control over the exposure and other camera settings via your smartphone. This Nikon mirrorless camera has a durable magnesium alloy chassis with critical points sealed to keep dust and moisture at bay. An EN-EL15b Li-ion battery pack powers the camera.

    Excellent Camera

Reviewed on Wednesday, June 5, 2019

Rated 5.0 out of 5 stars.

Excellent Camera, not much bigger or heavier (with equivalent zooms attached) than the Olympus E-M1 MK II. Intuitive controls, a quality kit lens in the 24-70mm f/4 (despite so called pros stating differently on YouTube) and it is a very compelling camera. Battery life, with correct settings will last a long time, just don’t expect it to with the rear screen on all the time, again something you can easily adjust. Nikon knows how to make cameras.
