    Understanding Your Camera I: The Basics

    You have a digital camera and you know that the images are going to be far superior to the ones captured by your point-and-shoot camera, but maybe you're not sure how that happens.  This class is for beginners to amateur photographers looking to gain a better understanding of the automated modes and features, as well as the manual control and capabilities, of your digital SLR or mirrorless camera.

    Get instruction on the importance of understanding the fundamentals (such as depth of field, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, metering, white balance, reading histograms, on camera flashes, lenses) and how they will affect your photos!

    In the second half of the class, the students will work with their cameras and apply what they have learned.  The buttons and settings will be much easier to manipulate and each student will have develop the ability to capture the images closer to their vision.

    Please note that this class is NOT for point-and-shoot cameras.

    This course of hands-on workshops is suitable for photographers of all levels who are truly interested in learning and advancing their techniques. The primary pre-requisite is that you know your camera and have a basic understanding of manual settings.  From working Professionals to serious amateurs, we will cover wide ranging topics, styles and gear and will shoot live during every class. From available light to constant lights to speedlights to studio strobes every possibility will be covered.

    Workshop Registration: "Mastering Portrait Lighting" consists of 10 sessions.  Each session will cover a defined range of topics, so you have the option of signing up for the entire course, pick a series of classes that interest you, or enroll for single classes.  There will be overlap and adjustments as necessary to make the most effective use of time and details will be flexible based on the needs of the participants.  Please see the OVERVIEW below for specific topics for each session.

    SEMINAR: The seminar will take place on Friday evening, July 10th, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Michael Downey will explain how to capture mesmerizing scenery and you'll be able to put these skills to use the next evening, capturing our area's most stunning bridges and historical landmarks.  You'll also be able to try out some of Sony's new Alpha cameras.

    CRUISE: On Saturday, July 11th, everyone will meet up at Port Imperial promptly at 3:30pm.  Once aboard, you'll enjoy drinks while sailing through the Hudson and East rivers, stopping at various locations where you can capture amazing photographs of the the G.W. Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Verrazano Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the USS Intrepid.  Models will also be on-board to offer additional photo opportunities.

    NYC SKYLINE: There will be break for dinner and a journey over to Hoboken, where you'll be able to take pictures of the entire NYC Skyline during the legendary "Golden Hour" and majestic "Blue Hour".

    Cruise rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 12th.
