Understanding Your Camera I: The Basics (Philly)

You have a digital camera and you know that the images are going to be far superior to the ones captured by your point-and-shoot camera, but maybe you're not sure how that happens. This class is for beginners to amateur photographers looking to gain a better understanding of the automated modes and features, as well as the manual control and capabilities, of your digital SLR or mirrorless camera.
Get instruction on the importance of understanding the fundamentals (such as depth of field, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, metering, white balance, reading histograms, on camera flashes, lenses) and how they will affect your photos!
In the second half of the class, the students will work with their cameras and apply what they have learned. The buttons and settings will be much easier to manipulate and each student will have develop the ability to capture the images closer to their vision.*Please note that this class is NOT for point-and-shoot cameras.

Understanding Your Camera II: Exposure and Metering

If you want to register for class in Philly (PA), click here.Understanding the basics of exposure and metering are the building blocks to becoming a good photographer. This course will teach you these fundamental basics of photography such as the relationship between f-stops and shutter speeds, as well as understanding the positives and negatives of ISO/ASA sensitivity with your image sensor.
How your camera's metering system works, metering modes, scene modes, advantages of RAW versus JPEG image files, interpreting the histogram, exposure compensation, manual controls and much more will all be discussed!

Understanding Your Camera III: Composition and Shooting

If you want to register for class in Philly (PA), click here.Knowing all the science and mathematics behind photography can only take you so far. The art of photography is 90 percent seeing and 10 percent photographing. Learn the vital aspects and rules of image composition and graphic design as they apply to taking photographs, as well as how to analyze color temperature of light and its effects on your photographs.
Once we've covered the essentials of white balance and composition, students will spend the remainder of the class shooting and practicing everything they've learned in the "Understanding Your Camera" series of classes!

Intro to Flash Photography

This class takes place at our FAIRFIELD location.
In this class, Michael Downey will teach students how to manage additional lighting. The class will cover the pop-up flash built into DSLRs, as well as speedlites that go into the hot shoe. You'll also learn how to use flash as the main, key, and fill light. Flash compensation will also be discussed.
Demonstrations include bouncing/reflecting flash, diffusing the light, and using flash for subject separation.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Photowalk with Michael Downey

With the persistent cold weather, it's a perfect time to photograph indoors. Join Head Instructor Michael Downey on a photowalk through the exhibits of the Metropolitan Museum of Art!
Michael will start with a 30-minute photo class covering low light photography and photography in museums. From Ancient Egypt to Medieval Europe to Africa, Oceania and then on to the classical world of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, we will encounter works that reflect humankind's highest achievements. We can make it a photographic highlights tour which includes the Arms and Armor Gallery, the Temple of Dendur, the Asmat Canoe, and of course, Van Gogh. Let's see who can tell this story in the most powerful way!*Limited to 10 registrants.

Drones 101: Hands-on 2-Day Workshop with Timothy Hughes

Gain an overall knowledge of drone types and applications in this 2-day workshop at Unique Photo Fairfield! With the help of a licensed drone pilot, Timothy Hughes, you'll develop an understanding of safe drone practices, pre-flight checks, and operation. The goal of this hands-on course is to ensure that you feel comfortable with your drone and are able to operate it while also understanding how to handle any issues that may arise.
Topics Include:
• Types of drones and their best suited applications
• Basics of setup and operation
• How to connect your equipment
• System setup, statuses, and flight modes
• How to evaluate GPS, link quality, battery level
• How to perform a compass calibration
• How to avoid magnetic interference prompt situations
• Reading your map and flight telemetry data
• Learning and conforming to FAA Rules
• Navigating back to home point if you lose line of sight
• Understanding controllers and in-flight stick commandsOnce all of the preflight data is learned in the classroom, we'll move into startup and takeoff procedures. We'll discuss the proper location for taking off and ensure your environment is safe for drone operation. Outdoors in the parking lot, you'll learn how to take off and land manually as well as automatically. We'll work to further your knowledge of each in-flight stick command as well as what each controller key does through more hands-on practice. Each student will have time to fly their drones with the instructor's assistance.

Painting with Fire with Michael Downey

Join Michael Downey as he leads a brief seminar on night photography incorporating burning light. He will share techniques, photo equipment requirements, and materials used for achieving images like the ones below. Afterwards, you'll have the opportunity to create similar images safely outdoors on the Unique Photo property.
There will be three different staging areas that each participant will rotate through. This way, everyone will have an opportunity to photograph several different designs from different positions. You will leave that evening with a body of work illustrating just how amazing photographing fire can look.

Escape the cold and practice your photography by joining Michael Downey at the Museum of Modern Art! The day begins with a 30-minute class covering low light photography and taking photos in museums. Tripods and flash photography aren't allowed, but we can capture wonderful images regardless!
We will check out the works, "Private Lives Public Spaces," Haegue Yang: Handles, and Shuzo Azuchi Guliber's Cinematic Illumination, along with others. It'll be a photographic highlights tour of modern art.
