  • NJCS: Corrective Techniques for Real People Portraits with Bobbi Lane

    Class Code: UUU8204

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

The dynamic duo of Bobbi Lane, the Mistress of Light, and Lee Varis, the Sultan of Skin take you on a photographic adventure to master the art of creating flattering and effective portraits of real people. You will learn the essential techniques for photographing normal people in the real world, without fancy wardrobe, expensive hair and makeup, or extreme and difficult retouching.

Bobbi will show how to use corrective techniques to overcome challenging subjects and Lee will take the results and refine and finish the image into a marketable photograph.

Shooting tethered into the computer, we demonstrate comprehensive lighting techniques and effective posing, helping make the most pleasing portraits of difficult subjects: thin or heavy, spectacled, young or old, balding, red or wrinkled. Lee will take the captured images to the next level with Lightroom and Photoshop enhancement techniques for quick fixes and complete makeovers that don’t require special artistic talent, but instead utilize the power inherent in the basic software without extra plug-ins or extensions.

These techniques apply to all kinds of portraits: personal headshots, business, couples and families. Learning these skills help you make stronger and more saleable images.

  • NJCS: High Key and Low Key Lighting with Bobbi Lane (Fujifilm)

    Class Code: UUU8241

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

This seminar with Bobbi Lane presents essential lighting techniques and tools for the photographer to create the impact and range of mood for the portrait.

The classic High Key is a pure white background with the subject well illuminated for a bright, happy and lively feeling. Low Key traditionally is a dark or black background, with more side lighting and shadows for a dramatic and evocative portrait. Light is the essence of a successful portrait, so understanding the three key elements; direction, quality and depth, is crucial. Controlling these elements is essential in terms of retaining detail in both shadows and highlights without sacrificing your choices for establishing mood.

We will demonstrate many creative methods of lighting and why to choose certain modifiers. The technical set up for high-key and low-key lighting will be fully explained and demonstrated!

  • NJCS: Techniques for Dragging the Shutter with Bobbi Lane (Fujifilm)

    Class Code: UUU8242

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

Balancing strobe and ambient light is tricky but the results can be amazing. We use the flash to illuminate the subject, and slow the shutter speed (hence the term “dragging”) to pull in the background ambient light.

Once you get the basic concept of how to set your flash and what camera settings to use, it’s easy and fun to experiment. We'll first learn how to get the proper balance of exposure between the two light sources-flash and ambient- then we play by shaking or spinning the camera, zooming the lens, panning and more. The flash will light the subject and freeze any motion, and then moving the camera will blur the background in a variety of ways.

Join Bobbi Lane for this fun, creative class and shoot!

Lighting and posing are the focus of so many photography courses, but they don’t often cover what really matters - expression. Photographers can spend so much time worrying about the technical aspect of portrait photography, that they forget about the human element.

Great expression comes from making your subject comfortable and connecting with them in a real way. No matter what your personality type, this course can teach you to engage and connect with your subject in a way that will take your portraiture to the next level.

    Class Code: UUU228

    Instructor:
    Joe Brady
    Skill Level:
    Everyone

While Adobe Lightroom is an important place to start, there are many edits, enhancements and corrections that only Photoshop can accomplish. This series of classes will take you from the beginning with an introduction to Photoshop tools, but perhaps more importantly, provide you with a workflow to follow when starting an image edit.

You will learn all about the real power of Photoshop - layers, masks, blending modes, and selections - and how to put them to use with both Landscape/Nature and Portrait images. From basic image edits, to color corrections to reshaping, removing and individually editing selection in an image, Photoshop is limited only by your imagination once you learn how to approach your edits.

  • EXPO: Creative Macro Photography with Jamie Davidson (AIP)

    Class Code: UUU7103

    Skill Level:
    Everyone

There's an artist lurking inside every photographer, whether they know it or not. In the arena of "smalls", macro photography has a way of drawing the artist out. Whether you love to shoot flowers, relegated rust, feathers, coins or nuts and bolts, how you choose to design your image can make all the difference. What tool you choose to use is equally influential. The most powerful tools of any artist/photographer are found within – life experience, interests and imagination. Balancing the serious and playful or the technical focus and going with the flow can be challenging. The beauty of macro photography is that it can be done anywhere, anytime, and it serves both the technician and the artist.

In this session, Jamie will share her approach to macro photography, regardless of subject matter. The key is to "connect," and push yourself beyond perceived boundaries so that your images express your personal vision. Creative tools beyond the macro lens include Lensbaby optics (Velvet 56, Soft focus), making use of diopters (Canon 500D, Nikon 6T) and lighting techniques. Jamie will also discuss extending your vision beyond the camera with tools such as Topaz Impression, Texture Effect, and more. Your inner artist awaits.
