Even if this is the very first time you’ve ever worked in Photoshop, the class will start with the very basics. You'll learn how to open up Photoshop and how to bring a Raw image into Photoshop by way of Camera Raw, as well as the basics of image enhancements. Once you are comfortable with the basics, you will begin to learn more advanced techniques, from creating selections and masks in order to enhance just parts of a photo to learning about blending modes to creating adjustment layers. You will also spend lots of time experimenting on your own with your personal photos. By the end of the 5 weeks, you will have lots of information so that you can better teach yourself how to make your photos look their best!

  • Photograph the Americas Cup Race Up Close on the Hudson River

    America’s Cup racing will return to New York for the first time since 1920 with Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series racing on May 7-8, 2016.  The New York event is one of six events planned during 2016, each featuring thrilling, high-speed competition, as six America’s Cup teams, with the top sailors in the world, vie for points that count towards the final competition for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

    On Friday, May 6th, Instructor Mike Zawadzki will hold a seminar at Unique Photo from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.  He'll go over camera settings and shooting tips in preparation for the race on Sunday.

    On Sunday, May 8th, you'll have a chance to capture the excitement and action from the waters on our own private yacht!  The Jewel is set to sail along the Hudson River and remain as close to the race as possible.  This is an amazing opportunity to capture shots from different vantage points and spectate the finals.

    • Board the Jewel at Lincoln Harbor/Weehawken promptly at 12:00pm.
    • Transportation and parking is NOT included.

  • Understanding Your Camera I: The Basics

    You have a digital camera and you know that the images are going to be far superior to the ones captured by your point-and-shoot camera, but maybe you're not sure how that happens.  This class is for beginners to amateur photographers looking to gain a better understanding of the automated modes and features, as well as the manual control and capabilities, of your digital SLR or mirrorless camera.

    Get instruction on the importance of understanding the fundamentals (such as depth of field, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, metering, white balance, reading histograms, on camera flashes, lenses) and how they will affect your photos!

    In the second half of the class, the students will work with their cameras and apply what they have learned.  The buttons and settings will be much easier to manipulate and each student will have develop the ability to capture the images closer to their vision.

    Knowing all the science and mathematics behind photography can only take you so far. The art of photography is 90 percent seeing and 10 percent photographing. Students will learn the vital aspects and rules of image composition and graphic design as they apply to taking photographs.

    This class will go over the essentials of white-balance and composition. Learn how to analyze the color temperature of light and how it affects your photographs. Your DSLR camera won't always be able to accurately reproduce colors which is where proper white-balancing comes into play. While there might be preset white-balance options in your camera, you will learn how to set up a custom white-balance enabling you to get the proper color in any lighting situation.

    Join Head Instructor Michael Downey in this opportunity to learn how to capture stunning images of the sunset and moonrise as they overlook the Manhattan Skyline from Port Imperial in Weehawken, NJ!

    Michael will begin the night with a class on sunset and night photography before everyone sets up along the waterfront.  The sun will set and the moon will rise around 8:15pm.  The moon will be 94.9% (waxing gibbous) since the complete full moon happens at 7:02am on Monday, June 20th.

    Be sure to bring your tripod, remote shutter release, and comfortable shoes.  Bring a telephoto lens if you want to capture some isolated shots of the moon!
