  • NJCS: Long Exposure Photography with Thibault Roland (Sony)

    Class Code: UUUCS8362

In most people’s mind photography has to be truthful to reality. It has to depict a scene, and atmosphere, and event accurately. But it's so much more than a simple tool to document our lives… It's also a way to express ourselves, our point of view, to share our messages. It's art that can be abstract and minimalistic. It allows us to change what we see based on our emotions and intent.

Long exposure photography embraces that, transforming reality into a dialogue. By stretching the time used to capture a single image, the photographer includes movement in their art: water becomes smooth, clouds create long silky streaks, trees blur out in the wind... the effects are endless. Long exposure is a different mindset. One that comes from within and uses what is out there in order to produce unique and breathtaking images. Images that go beyond documenting and bridge into the Fine Arts.

In this technical lecture, Sony Artisan of Imagery Thibault Roland will introduce long exposure and discuss the equipment needed to shoot with this technique. By the end, you will have a checklist of the different steps to follow, as well as some tips and tricks.

But what happens when these colors are removed? Suddenly we step away from reality and enter an unfamiliar world where patterns, geometrical shapes and contrasts emerge stronger.

During this lecture, Sony Artisan of Imagery Thibault Roland will discuss Black and White Photography. How to create and use leading lines, textures, and light in order to build dynamic and original photographs. He will illustrate how important it is to visualize and build an image even before pressing the shutter button, and how your overall photography work (including color) can benefit from the rigorous process of creating in B&W.

  • NJCS: Let Me Sow Love with Roger Richardson

    Class Code: UUUCS8399

Working in a photographic documentary style, Roger Richardson is interested in telling stories of the human condition; whether it be through emotionally charged photographs or through the images of others. His work derives from a deep desire for human connection, empathy, and compassion. By using photography to document his experience, his hopes are to create honest and impassioned images of the world around him. Join Richard as he presents his first monograph, Let Me Sow Love.

As the title suggests, this is a book full of what feel like genuine and compassionate interactions and engagements, as opposed to the now-expected confrontations. You sense right away that Richardson knows this place intimately, and these are his people. As a result, Let Me Sow Love presents with remarkable clarity a compelling portrait of an utterly realistic human community at a unique and radically insecure moment in the country’s history.

*Copies of Let Me Sow Love will be available for purchase and signing. Feel free to bring your own copy!
